Dear Joanna,
So suffer!
I have had more than 30 years experience treating acne. The first 13 years strictly conventionally, and the last 17+ combining many healing approaches successfully. How much have you had?

I have to admit that your relaxation techniques sound a bit hokey. I have had three different dermatologists and all of them say that diet has no significant effect on acne.
I am very fit, have always been fit, and eat right. Sitting with my legs crossed and humming wont get me anywhere. If i need relaxation I will find it through Jesus Christ, not some silly mind hypnosis.

It's interesting how quickly you dismiss skilled relaxation as anti-Christian. It seems to me a good way to clear the mind of MY thoughts so I can hear HIS. You might discuss it with your pastor.

Dear Bubba,
If you know so much about Jesus, you also know that he meditated regularly.
A wise man once said: "If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always gotten."
So long as what you have been doing is working, more power to you!

Dear Busta,
This varies widely from community to community (and from pharmacy to pharmacy within any community). Call around, they will not hesitate to tell you. Shopping for the best price can save a lot of money.

I have been treating acne for only about 9 years (my own) and i trust the opinions and testimonies of people like me more than those of Dr. Walt(Nick Riviera)Stoll. We've been hearing silly remedies since the sixth grade and the relaxation and vitamin solution is only filed away with other such gems of advice such as sunbathing, soaking in saltwater, drinking more water, and misting with Evian. If it were that easy no one would have acne. Maybe it's an unorthodox idea in the realm of Stoll, but a medication that shrinks the overactive sebaceous glands that cause most acne (not forgetting to take your flintstones)seems much more effective and sensible than a spiel about relaxation. I sincerely doubt that the patients who had such successful results with this treatment suffered from the persistent and severe acne that Accutane users did. I also suspect that they were patients who "grew out of" their acne and attributed this pleasant part of getting older to these miracle relaxation excercises. If these methods are so successful then why don't other dermatologists use them? It would be much more profitable to have weekly relaxation training than to hand out prescriptions. Things that make you go "hmmmm"...
I have just finished my treatment with Accutane and am very happy with my clear, china-doll skin. My brother was also completely cured. My older relatives have told me that they wish the drug had been around when they were younger. Before Accutane I had tried 3 different antibiotics, 2 types of benzoyl peroxide, Retin-A, Ortho-tri-cyclin, and every over the counter product I could get my hands on. It was well worth the expense and discomfort to look like a normal human being and rebuild on whatever self-esteem remained from the years of feeling like a hideous monster. I pity those who endure the extra scars and prolonged pain of ridiculous treatment at the hands of quacks.
I apologize for the ungodly length of my rant!

Dear Melissa,
Intentional ignorance is its own reward.
One can make MANY times as much money writing prescriptions than teaching skilled relaxation.
Shows how much YOU know.
I won't even bother refuting your other claims. So long as you are satisfied with your present treatment you should continue it.
I have tried it both ways. I KNOW which way works best & which way makes the most money. What would I have to gain by offering this knowledge free on the internet if it didn't work? At best, I would look like a fool. The only reason I am offering it is that there ARE "treasures more precious than gold" that accrue when someone has the courage to learn something new & reports their success for others to consider.
Some people would sooner die than learn something new (even have chronic acne).

Accutane and alcohol should not be mixed together. I'm also on this medication and my dermatologist told me that alcohol should be avoided because it may cause high triglyceride levels in your bloodstream. This may cause more severe side effects on the heart and blood vessels. You can drink every once and a while, but you really have to keep it under control.
Just trying to help.......

Dear Jerry,
The price for avoiding causes keeps getting higher, doesn't it?
Go to the library & ask the reference librarian for the PDR and ask him/her to help you find the info about Accutane. I will bet you wouldn't take it for ANY price once you know the facts. If you already have a prescription, you can show it to the pharmacist & s/he will give you a package insert that has all the information in the PDR.
ALL people with acne will see it disappear within 6 months if they will practice the 3 things all holistic practitioners have recommended for many years: the regular practice of skilled relaxation, regular exercise and a whole-foods diet. If they want faster results they should add the essential oils I mention on the homepage of this website (link on this page) and eat less that 10% of their total calories as fat until about 3 months after the acne is gone. If you are interested in a free protocol (with references) as to how to do this, send me a stamped, self-addressed business sized envelope & I will send you one. Send your request to Sunrise Health Coach, Box #12091, Panama City, FL 32401-9091.
As you get well, please share your experiences with the BB participants. There are still some people on the BB who would rather keep their acne than learn something new. Perhaps more personal testimonials will help them change their minds?

After seeing a long list of arguments back and forth on what is best I thought it would be interesting to see what methods worked for the readers (if any) of this letter out there. So what cleared up your acne?

Hi Jen. I thank you for sharing your experiences with Accutane. I've been doing some research concerning Accutane in an effort to gain the facts prior to starting a course of Accutane myself.
The reason I write is because I find your statement that marijuana is "non-addictive" to be rather disturbing. You would probably be intersted in doing some research of your own on the effects of marijuana to change your own system of beliefs.
As a little experiment, as one of your friends who regularly smokes marijuana (or even cigarettes) to stop for a while, say a week or two. Then ask them later on if they were honestly able to avoid smoking for that period. I bet they either avoid the question or answer no.

After years of hell in school and dose after dose of antibiotics and creams, I finally found the "miracle drug". I started on Accutane in August of 1997. At first I was discouraged because my face got worse and the dryness was unbearable. I couldn't wear makeup and was always putting on lotion. After the first two months however the symptoms improved and my face started to get clear. I was amazed at how my high school friends looked at me when attending a football game. The only side effects that I have experienced are the normal. Dry skin, bleeding nose but I have a lot of hair loss. My hair used to be relativlely thick but now it has gotten thin. No bald spots but a lot thinner than what it was. Even if this side effect is not reversed, I feel the thin hair is something I can live with now that I have clear skin.

Dear Chris,
Remember all the years we were taught that nicotine was not addicting. I can recall in medical school we had a special class just to teach us the difference between "habituation" & "addiction". They used smoking as their example. Of course, they were wrong since they were taking their information from the tobacco companies. At that time the AMA was a major stockholder of the tobacco companies.
The textbook definition of addiction is anything that causes "physiological changes" in the person when the substance is withdrawn. I think MJ fits that definition. Of course, that is true of the diabetic who has "physiological changes" when s/he is deprived of his/her insulin. How about those of us who would "have physiological changes" if we were deprived of air or water? Have you heard of sugar withdrawal?
I am not disparaging your statement about MJ. I happen to agree with it. However, NOTHING is so simple that it might not benefit from more thought.

Yes, my skin definitely takes longer to heal than it did previously. My dermatologist definitely did tell me that this would be the case. I am 25 (almost 26) years old, and I finished my course of Accutane when I was 22 years old.
I occasionally still get a blemish or two. They always take far longer to heal than they did before I took Accutane. My doctor said that it was perfectly normal.

I had done the whole thing with retin-a and antibiotics, and nothing helped... and then I went on accutane in Oct 1996. I was totally clear by March 1997, and the marks continued to heal up and fade out. My skin also felt better, less irritable and less sensitive. (I'm of Irish descent, pale with red hair.) In august it broke out again, and after awhile of this I started on accutane again recently. I am now waiting for it to kick in again. My new dermatologist told me that it is probably "atopic" skin disorder or something, words to that effect... where all my follicles clog. I have those little bumps everywhere which I had never thought much of... he examined me and told me it was all related. I am now trying to find information about this atopic (sp?) disorder, and how it is treated in the long term. He suggested Retin-A permanently to prevent further breakouts after I am done with this course. Has anyone out there experienced similar recurrences?
thanks,
David

There is a ton of information on the board about accutane. Just hit the search function and write in ACCUTANE. This may answer all your questions, or you may then have specific questions to ask.

I am 29 years old and taking Accutane for the third. My first treatment was at 17 years old, next at 23 years old, and again now. My acne has never been severe, so I have had difficulty finding doctors who will prescribe it. (Female, Child-Bearing age) After several months of treatment I have always seen improvement, yet my acne returns after about a year.
As far as the skin healing, I asked my doctor who confirmed that your skin will heal slower when using Accutane.

THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE! I stopped my course of accutane (my second course) and went on an incredible program - drug free and my skin cleared within a month! If you would like to know more, please contact me and I will send you info - no obiligation! I know it will help you too - I had acne for 15 years previously; this program is amazing - there is nothing in the world like it - I had tried everything else under the sun and THIS IS THE ONLY THING that has cleared my skin; accutane cleared it for a year then it came back - I didn't want to keep taking such a heavy drug.
