I'm still having problems with my ear/head and the chiropractor is full. So, a friend of mine recommended a chinese acupuncturist that she knows of here in Groningen. He is able to see me on Tuesday and the appt will take an hour. I'm a little nervous about this. Was hoping some of you board regulars could share your POSITIVE experiences with acupuncture. Also, do those needles hurt???????!!!

If the acupunturist is good, the needles don't hurt at all. Sometimes I have felt a little pinch, but only for a second. Bad acupunture doctors push the needles in too far and that hurts a LOT. I have been treated for back pain, menopause and alergies, all with great success. Understand that this is a medical treatment, and may take more than one session. Good luck!

I had accupuncture on my face and my butt, and it wasn't painful at all. It did relieve pain, and it doesn't hurt like getting a shot.

Not only is it a medical treatment that may take more than one session, but I think it is also only a treatment of the symptoms. I think you should focus on getting to the cause of the symptoms.

Hi Barbara! Listen, girl if you're desperate enough, do it. Actually a good acupuncturist will know something about the possible causes of the problem. A needle will occasionally hurt a tiny bit, but nothing like an injection. I would say go for it, You have nothing to lose. You may be very surprised at the results. Oh, and you might get some icky tasting Chinese herbal concoction to go with the treatment. Drink it! Good luck!

The needles do sort of hurt depending on where you are being punctured, but it is very tolerable and VERY worthwhile if he is good. Once they are in you will not feel a thing, and within minutes you will feel very relaxed.
You may be extremely tired and want to sleep for a day or so. If this happens, just tell the doc (if you have additional treatments) so they won't leave the needles in that long at this particular site in the back of the neck.
It took 3 to 4 days for me to feel the results in my lower back.
Enjoy!

I had a great experience with acuptuncture. Those little needles didn't hurt at all. I've haven't had to take any pain meds since I had acupuncture. I highly recommend acupuncture.

Accupuncture has been very helpful for me. Often times it will take several treatments. I would encourage you to give it a try, It will help with short term relief. When you start feeling better remember to get to the root of the problem so it will not reoccur.

Don't want to be a downer but I had about 7 acupuncture sessions and I never noticed any benefits. I wasn't having it for pain though. I had some bad symptoms from the treatments, such as ice cold feet off and on that wouldn't warm up. They didn't return to normal for many months. Also, hate to say it but although probably 8 out of every 10 needles didn't hurt, I had some real stingers that almost had me scared to come back - like the equivalent of 3 bee stings. Whenever I had that kind of sting from a needle, I always developed a nasty bruise right away and tenderness to the area that lasted for days. I guess I didn't have a "good" acupuncturist!

Hi Barbara N.,
I have never had acupuncture, but I have several friends who have had it for various reasons - one for dryness of the mouth - and all of them have had great results. The Acupuncturist you are going to has been referred to you by a satisfied patient, which is extremely important, don't you think?? I have never heard anyone say that it was painful. Raisa

Barbara, sorry to hear about you ear. I have spoken to my landlord, who does different kinds of massagages and knows a lot about the body. He asked if you have other symptoms, like low grade fever, nausea or dizziness. I asked what if it were your jaw, and he said that you would then have problems with chewing. He also wondered if you had pain on one side only.
When it comes to acupuncture, it is probably most important that you find someone in Holland, who knows a good acupuncturist. As you may remember, initially I did have a good experience with acupuncture, but during one treatment she hit the nerve in my wrist, and I had a very obvious nerve inflammation (for 3 months), but she denied her treatment had anything to do with it. I liked the acupuncture, but disliked the denial part.
Setting the needles in normally does not hurt, and it is a sensation that you get very quickly used to. Sometimes it may burn a little bit, but it dissapears very quickly. The sensation of relaxation that follows afterwards is really heavenly. I would recommend acupuncture, and - if it does relax you, but you still have an earache, then I would suspect infection.
My last special advice to you is not to listen too hard to all that Dutch, you tire out your ears :)

Ahhh how sweet of you to ask your landlord about me :-)
The pain is on one side. I don't seem to have a fever with it. But there was one night (the third night) that I woke up at 4am in pain and also was sweating like a fever had broken. I don't have any problems chewing but once in a while when I swallow I feel pain in the same side of my throat. I wouldn't say I was dizzy per say but I was feeling a little offbalance. When I took the bus to the doctor's office, I felt it the most. Reminded me of a couple of years ago when I had the vertigo problems but it wasn't as severe and didn't last long. The doctor prescribed tramadol for me which is supposed to be a relatively strong painkiller but it didn't help. Peracetmol didn't help either. Only thing that helped was ibuprofin. I'm quite functional as long as I take that but I know it worsens inflamation in the long run so I want to get off of it as soon as possible.
So far today things are looking good. I usually wake up with some pain and immediately take some ibuprofin. So far this morning...NO PAIN! Well, there is an occaisional twitch but nothing I can't handle for the time being.
I hope this guy is good. My Japanese friend swears by him and said you should never use an acupuncturist who isn't chinese. I guess we'll see on Tuesday. Pieter said he'd go with me but he won't watch hahaha Such a whimp. How long do they usually leave the needles in for? Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Are you really so tired afterwards? My appt is at 3:30 and they say it will take an hour. At 6, we are supposed to go to a dinner to celebrate my boyfriend's parent's anniversary (they are celebrating 60 years of being married! Can you imagine?? haha) I hope I'm not too wiped out for it or fall asleep in my pancakes haha They are having the dinner at a pancake restaurant. Here pancakes are a dinner item.

Was your acupuncturist Chinese? I hope I don't get any bee stings!!

Don't mention it.
What he said was that if you had nausea, dizzines, fever + very strong pain, it could be mid-ear infection. But hen again, I don't think that would go away by itself...
I have only been to that one acupuncturist, and she left the needles for about half an hour. Very relaxing!
Hope you'll get better soon. I'd really want to know what it was...but the main thing is that you get well.
About watching the needles - it's like any new experience, at first it is odd, fascinating or repulsive or whatever. But once you've done it several times, you get used to it. The needles are very thin, they do not look threatening at all. It takes an experienced practitioner only a few seconds to set them in. Hope the practitioner will try to diagnose you properly, pulse, tongue and the whole bunch.
Don't worry, you'll be fine :)
let us know how it goes
Sonja

No, he wasn't Chinese. You'll probably be fine, seems like my experience was out of the ordinary.
