Acupuncture.. how long to do it?

Posted by Georgia [3336.3937] on January 16, 2009 at 23:33:06:

I was wondering.. how many sessions is usually required for improvement? i'm sure it varies but is there a rule... I had scalp tingling from an auto accident (post below) and by golly, it's getting better, ever since about the 3rd or 4th treatment of acupuncture.. now it could be coincidence since it has been 2 months since my accident.. but just in case, I don't wnat to stop it now after my 5th treatment b/c I feel like I should continue for a certain period of time. But I don't know a thing about acupunture and how long I should continue w/it to make sure I'm fully recovered?

Georgia,

I have seen miraculous results after the first treatment (a notable example was my dog, Shakti) but the usual time is a few: 3-5 treatments). It can take a month or so with a dozen treatments. If no results by that time, it is likley that this will not help.

Of course, much depends upon the problem and how long it has been present.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Thanks so much!

So once I start to feel better w/the acupuncture, then I don't need to continue? I can just stop? My fear is that it'll come back.. like acupuncture is kind of like a bandaid... I wasn't sure if I should just do a few more "just in case"??

That is the wonderful thing. I had work done on my thumb, 2 or 3 treatments, about 4 years ago and I am still doing great.

Hi Georgia,

It really depends on the person, the situation, the history, the
genetics....there are a lot of factors involved, and there isn't ONE
answer to your question.

I have been doing acupuncture for over a year now. In my situation
there are many factors involved such as a car accident, professional
injuries and gentetics as well as other histories. For me, what I have
found is that it is a progressive thing. My acupuncturist would only
see me every two weeks at first, then went through a period of
weekly, and now we are down to every two or three weeks again. I
have seen huge progress in my body, my organs, my injuries, etc....it
has affected every bit of my life and has been a life altering journey.
But it was not within a month, or two, or three. As my acupuncturist
says, he is putting me back together, piece by piece. And, he is. It is
working beautifully. So, it depends on what you are going in for.

For me, what has happened is that I couldn't go three weeks without
back sliding. In my acupuncturist's belief, having a bunch of
sessions crammed in all at once is way too much of a shock for the
system and he most often does NOT recommend it. Long term
healing is a process. I am now capable of going a months before I
feel the "need" to have an appointment, but still go in for progressive
healing every two weeks. (I found out my limit when he was on
vacation recently). There are no set rules for how long one should
go. One thing though, you should feel results each time you go in if
the practitioner is apt. Each time I go in, I feel very different when I
leave. If not, you should consider finding another practitioner. As in
any profession, there are those out there that aren't very effective.

This modality of healing has been the most profound so far of
anything I have done.

Georgia,

I would do a few more "just in case".
