Skin

Posted by Concerned on September 12, 2003 at 11:51:54:

I have a question - if I frequently tug at a section of skin on my face like cheeks, eyebrows, etc... does the skin eventually become loose and stretched out in that area or will the skin's elastic properties return it to the same position regardless of how many tugs are received? I am 19 years old. I would appreciate any responses. Thanks!

Hi, Concerned.

The elastic fibers in the skin are what finally cause wrinkles since they can only be stretched out so many times before they will not go back to their normal length. They are just like a rubber band that has exceeded it's quota of stretches.

SO, the answer is YES.

I have been doing this habit for about 4 months now and I have stopped. I have been specifically pulling my eyebrow hairs out with my hands. I would only actually pull on my eyebrows maybe once a day for a period of 20 - 30 seconds though. Do you think this is enough to have had an effect or am I being paranoid?

Dear Concerned,

That you are so concerned about wrinkles and aging at
such a beautiful young age of 19 is what concerns me.
Why are you thinking about aging right now? When I
was 19, I thought I would be young forever, and enjoyed
the youth of my face. Sure, you don't want to have
habits such as tugging on your face (by the way, why
are you doing this?), but you have so many more
wonderful years of yourth, should you take care of your
health (read about wellness here).

We will all age. Take it from a 42 year old woman.
Don't worry!! Worrying will age you faster than most
things, internally, and externally. Enjoy your youth. You
only get one chance at it!! :-) Don't lose the enjoyment
out of fear of what "could" happen. Just take care of
yourself, and you will be fine.

Thanks, Concerned.

Now that you have stopped, I doubt that you have caused enough permanent changes that you will ever notice it.

Thanks,DD.

I was thinking that but was waiting for someone else to mention it--which you did so eloquently.

Namaste`
