pilonidal cyst

I am now dealing with my 3rd cyst in a 4 yr period. My first was a small cyst on the left side of my back w/no complications. My second was the great pilonidal. How embarrasing... I had this cyst cut out in 2000 & am still in pain today. It hurts so bad to sit in a chair for my 8 hour work day & I don't know how to get relief. I thought my Dr. had butchered me until I found this site. He didn't explain the scar tissue & the long term effects I would be dealing with. I didn't notice the pilonidal cyst until getting into the tanning bed one summer afternoon. Could the tanning bed have caused it to "appear"? My mother & I didn't know that this was caused during my birth & she is very upset that the Dr. didn't bother telling her or maybe he didn't bother to examine that at all. I understand that everyone makes mistakes but this is my butt that I have to sit on all day in agony. I've tried many different shapes & sizes of pillows & nothing seems to help. I'm so ashamed that I lie & say I have lower back problems, I just don't tell them how low it is. People don't understand "cyst on tailbone" & they look @ you like you're a FREAK. Now to my delight I have developed a beatiful cyst on the right side of my back. It hurts to wear a bra & even a shirt. I almost lanced it myself b/c I was in so much pain. Don't worry, I will be calling the Dr. tomorrow. If I keep going @ this rate I will have scars all over my back. I guess I should be thankful that they only come up on my back. This is hereditary isn't it? I'm assuming so b/c my dad has had numerous cysts on his back. Thank you for having this site. I've learned so much. Up until now I was naive & thought I was the only one.

I too have a pilonidal and I know exactly how you feel! A suggestion on something to sit on. Try a Tush Cush I find them alot more comfortable and easier to use than a donut. You can order them online at www.tushcush.com. I have the original tush cush and the car tush cush.

The debate about being born with a Pilonidal cyst has been going on in the medical field. I've read good reports that support it but I have read more that say you are not born with it. Either way once you have it, it sucks!!!

I hope the tush cush helps! Good luck

Thanks, Tush Cush.

How do you explain the 5% of infant autopsies that have pilonidal nidi????

Hi, Jill.

Have you been using a Tush Cush?

I do not believe that all of your cysts are pilonidal. Only the one at your tail bone is. The others are sebaceous cysts and more can be prevented with the EFAs described in the homepage article. This preventive is also described in the sebaceous cyst archives.

Let us know how you are doing after about 6 months. You can still get new ones for about 3 months after you start the oils.

I was first diagnosed with a pilonidal cyst when I was 19. I had the "open" surgery the first time and it was VERY PAINFUL! It took @ a year for it to finally heal. Then, once again, it came back!! I think I made it @1 1/2 years between surgeries. The first time the Surgeon gave me a 50% chance it would come back. The second time I had the surgery, this surgeon used the "closed" method and it was alot better, healing and pain-wise. But now, 13 months later, I think it is back!!! My incision site is swelled and painful, but no drainage holes have "popped up" yet and it doesn't feel infected or look red. The second time I had the surgery, this surgeon gave me a 80% chance it would not come back. Of course, I have went 10 days and done the epsom salt/hot soaks, with no luck! Do I still have a chance to stop it from getting worse? What do you know about the laser surgery? I have an appointment with the Surgeon tomorrow and I will pray for the best, and expect the worst. Will keep you posted. Thanks.

5% show a pilonidal nidi? OK just to make sure is the nidi a nest of hairs or actual cysts? I would love to know if I can read the med reports on the 5% so I can learn more about it if it's available.

This nidi sometimes confuses me. Thanks for the info!

neither. they're only visible when removed and placed under a microscope.

Thanks, Sharon.

Perhaps your story will give pause to others thinking they can beat the odds with definitive surgery. See my note to "just" today about his question about "stats".

How do you do your hot soaks? Remember, all they do is stop the infections that complicate this problem. They do nothing about the problem itself.

If you had had the information on this 'site BEFORE your first surgery, what would you have done?

Namaste`

Re: pilonidal cyst THEORY (Archive in pilonidal.)

Hi, Tush Cush.

7% of newborn autopsies show pilonidal nidi at birth.

A pilonidal nidus is a nest of trapped epithelial cells under the epidermis, that are apparently cells left over from the incomplete separation of the notochord from the epidermis during fetal development. It is rare for only ONE nidus to be present which is why there are so many recurrances. Some of these cells are hair cells (luck of the draw) which is the main reason they are ever involved with this condition. Some of the cells are sebaceous cells--to be activated during puberty (again the luck of the draw)-- which is why these tend to flare up at and after puberty.

The validity of ANY theory is when ALL of the facts can be explained by the theory. The congenital, developmental theory is the only one that does.

Hope this helps.

Walt
