Cysts appearing-please help!

Posted by Anonymouse on August 04, 1999 at 00:09:45:

Dear Dr. stoll- I have just discovered your site which is a welcome releif after a recent bad experience with my health care facility.
The trouble I am having is recurring and very painful cysts on my legs. I had one about 6 months ago that went away on its own with antibiotic ointment and regular cleaning. this was on my thigh. When I developed another on my thigh a month later, I became worried and sought help from my doctor. She said that It was a cyst that had become infected(no kidding) and placed me on augmentin. She said that if it didn't clear up on it's own that she would have to open it with a scalpel and it would involve packing and daily visits for a few weeks. Thankfully, it cleared up on its own,and I have had them occasionally but they always clear up with time. Now, I have three at once. one on my shin, one on my thigh, and one under my arm. I am very worried as to what the cause of this might be- it seems that my immune system should be doing a better job of fighting this. I am a 20 year old female. I also suffer from Asthma, allergies, eczema, and an assortment of other lovely ailments-I would really like to get to the root of this-do you have any suggestions for supplements or diet changes that might help? Should I be worried about these cysts? They drain a large amount of greenish fluid mixed with blood, and I try to encourage them to drain by applying pressure to the surrounding skin- I also clean them with hydrogen peroxide and put bacitracin on them-what else should i be doing? Please Help! Thank you kindly

Please don't squeeze the Cysts!

Dr. Stoll will be along shortly, I'm sure.

In the meantime, one thing that jumped right out at me was your description of applying pressure to the surrounding skin to encourage your cysts to drain. As Mr. Whipple (Mr. Pimple?) would say, "Please don't squeeze the cysts!" The trouble as I understand it with squeezing pimples, not to mention cysts, is the liklihood of the pressure causing the infection to spread under the skin.

A few years back I bought and have used some a device called "The Extractor". It was yellow and looked something like a large syringe, less the needle. It was specifically for insect bites, snake-bites, bee stings, etc. It is actually a hand-held vacuum pump with attachments of various sizes used to apply vacuum to the skin around the bite. Fortunately, I never used if for bee stings, but I did use it for pimples. It made a very satisfying "Splat" when the pimple opened up and the contents erupted.

Now Walt may well say that this is NOT a good idea, either, but a least I've given him something to approve or disapprove as an alternative to what you have been doing, which I'm pretty sure in contraindicated.

About getting to the root of your problem: Expect Dr. Stoll to suggest that you start at the home page of this site and read about and practice Wellness. If in doubt, look for his three-legged stool approach to wellness, and look up any unfamiliar terms in our Glossary.

I am also interested in hearing more about cysts. I have one on my breast that I have had for years, it is quite pronounced, about the size of a dime. I did have it checked by my obygn who said it was just a cyst, it could have appeared anywhere, just happened to be on my breast.

Lately though it is a dark pink color, could this mean it is infected?

Thank you,

Dear Anonymous,

Are you overweight? Do you have a family history of diabetes? What did the culture show (I surely hope your doc has done one.)?

Take a look at the Health Coaching Protocol (see link on the home page of this 'site). If you can give us (the BB) a history like that, I would be a lot more able to figure out WHY this is happening to you.

Of course, your doc should already have taken this kind of history but few docs are diligent enough to do that. There is too much money to be made running people through to stop and take the time to actually figure out why this is happening. Since conventional medicine has a monopoly in this country, physicians do not have to deliver quality care to stay in business.

In the meantime, at the first sign of one coming, start very warm (As warm as you can tolerate. You do not have to burn yourself!),moist compresses (a wash cloth folded 4 times is about the right thickness and mass) 5 minutes at a time every few hours and you should be able to stop it in 24-48 hours. If you put a little antibacterial bath soap in the water (Dial, Phase III, Safeguard, P-300, etc.) it will help even more.

DO NOT DO THIS ON YOUR FEET IF YOU MAY HAVE DIABETES. If your doc has not checked this out, be sure that you get at LEAST a 2 hour PP blood sugar (measured meal) and NOT a fasting blood sugar which is what most lazy docs order (95% of all adult diabetics have a NORMAL fasting blood sugar! ALL docs know this and yet more than 99% of them sloppily order a fasting sugar for diagnosing diabetes.)

Let me know if I can be of more help.

Walt

dr. Stoll- thank you for taking the time to respond to my question. to answer yours: my grandfather and his sister have diabetes ( though they are not insulin-dependent i don't beleive) My doctor hasn't even mentioned diabetes but then again she isn't all that concerned about it in the first place- meanwhile this is painful and embarrasing for me, and I have developed one under my arm ( due to deodorant??) but it is different- it's harder and doesn't really show signs of infection or drainage. I wonder if this is something different. I read a bit about essential oils on your page- do you think I might benefit from those?
Thank you again for taking the time to adress my question- you are great!

Hi, Kristen.

Is it close to the nipple?

If it gets infected, you will know pretty quickly since it will swell and redness will spread beyond its borders. Since it is a cyst hot compresses will only perhaps help. They are still what I would do first. Once it starts to get infected, it will likely happen over and over till the cyst is removed.

Let us know what happens.

Hi, Anonymous.

The cysts may well stop coming (new ones) by using the essential oils. The diabetes would be causing you to be much more susceptible to the infections that come in the cysts. You really need to be checked. Perhaps it is time for you to find a truly comprehensive primary care provider.

Call (919) 787-5146 for the closest physicians who do not limit themselves to the simplistic allopathic paradigm. They are all Board Certified in conventional medicine so you would vbe getting the best of both worlds. You need a 5 hour glucose tolerance test with an appropriate 3 day loading period of at least 400 grams of carbohydrate each day. Any competent physician would know about this.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt
