molluscum contagiosum..help!!!

Posted by dani on March 01, 1999 at 07:52:39:

HELP!! i contracted this annoying virus 7 months ago. from what i have read, it usually goes away by now but can last up to 2 years and maybe even up to 4. i've gotten it treated several times with liquid nitrogen but when this didn't end it, the doctor said it wasn't worth it anymore. this is really torturing me: i'm in an open relationship w/ my boyfriend, and i can't do anything sexually with him because it will spread on myself (tried already) and i obviously can't see anyone new since it's contagious. so my relationship/sex life is on hold -- for maybe 2 years?? i know certain things in my life may be influencing how long the virus lasts.. stress, antibiotics for acne, etc. (do antibiotics affect the immune system?) but i will do anything to get over this asap. i'm wondering if you've heard much about this virus or have any specific tips in addition to the diet/exercise/relaxation thing which i am trying to work on. (although i'm severely stressed right now so my relaxation attempts are very difficult)

thanks so much.

p.s. what is your address so i can send you a contribution for all your help.

My little girl got the same thing a few years ago. I read somewhere that comfrey (liquid form) worked, so I tried it and sure enough in about 3 weeks all of the bumps were gone! And she'd had them for about a year at that point. I used it morning and night, a drop on each bump. My son recently picked it up somewhere, and so I'm using the comfrey on him. It will be interesting to see if it works again. Good luck!

Hi, dani.

Molluscum contagiosum is a viral infection of pretty low infectivity. The standard treatment is to use a sharp currette and simply scrape out each little bump down to its base. EVERY ONE MUST BE FOUND & CURRETTED. I have not seen these spontaneously resolve themselves. SO, if you have not had them treated, I am not surprised that they have stayed around for years. Have you seen a dermatologist about them? Perhaps you have not gotten the best advice about how to get rid of them?

Next, only people with poor immunity get or keep getting these things. Your present attempts at wellness are your best bet to keep them from recurring once they are adequately treated. Your sexual partner should not be at risk unless HE has also a low immunity. His following a wellness program would make him immune to your giving it to him within 6 months.

Finally, if your stress level is such that you have trouble with SR, you should do what I have recommended so many times in this situation: get a deep, whole-body, therapeutic massage at least 3 times a week for 2 weeks while continuing to practice your chosen SR.

I appreciate your offer to help with the BB expenses. All contributions are gratefully accepted. They should be sent to my publisher at Sunrise Health Coach, Box #12091, Panama City, FL 32401-9091.

Let us know how you do.

it does make sense that they are sticking around because my immunity was until recently very low and i am also quite stressed. however, i have gotten them treated many (7 or 8)times with liquid nitrogen, and more ones kept appearing. finally the doctor said it wasn't worth the torture anymore and i should just wait until they go away. maybe i should get another treatment.

meanwhile i'll be trying the comfrey & going for those massages!!!

Thank-you Kathy S. I stumbled on this page with tears in my eyes. I live in a small town and am getting absolutely no help with my 5 year-old sons case of Molluscum Contagiosum. I can't even get a referral to a dermatologist. I just know there has to be a better way than burning your babys flesh with liquid nitrogen. I will go and try some of this liquid comfrey and will report the results good or bad.

God Bless all of you,

What is comfrey? My 3-year-old's ordeal began with a single bump about 8 months ago. He now has at least 50! And I just discovered two bumps on my 2-year-old. We're been to a dermatologist who won't cauterize lesions, suggests we treat it with topical benzoyl peroxide and let it run its course. Is there anything else that will help clear up the lesions? Please help me help my children.

Dear Mary,

I cannot tell you about the comfrey. Someone else put that on the BB & I asked them to tell me more as well as hoping that others would tell me of THEIR experiences with this novel approach,

Personally, I have never seen a case of molluscum "run its course". If it is not treated adequately (in MY expereince using a sharp currette to scrape each lesion out) it just spreads to all the other susceptible members of the family.

Remember, the person's immunity has to be less than adequate for the individual to be "caught" by this virus.

We have discussed for years, right here on this BB, how to improve the immunity of children. It basically includes your becoming an expert in healthy nutrition and MAKING the children change from the terrible American diet to a much more sensible one.

Molluscum, in the form you are describing is a reliable herald of worse things to come UNLESS you listen to its message.

My dear sweet 7 year old now has blisters all over her face ,neck, stomach, and thighs. The dermatologist is using something he calls "beatlejuice". This has been a nightmare for my daughter. She gets teased at school and feels ugly. She has had 3 treatments so far. I am concerned about scars. My husband and I feel helpless. We also have a 3 month old little girl. How can I keep her safe from it. Help us please.

My daugher is six and has been fighting molluscum contagiosum since October. It has since gotten worse and has spread to her neck, face, stomach and back. I have tried giving her echinacea to help build up her immunity but didn't notice any difference. I also tried clear nail polish every other day. That did help some of the bumps go away but with scaring, so I stopped that. Can you tell me what comfrey is and where I could get it?

I got molluscum just over a year ago. I got the bumps burned off at my local Planned Parenthood whenever new ones showed up, but unfortunately some of them scarred. Finally, they quit showing up a couple of months ago. So yes, they honestly do run their course. And also, they can be passed sexually, like you know, so it's probably better to put your sex life on hold instead of infecting your boyfriend.

My son played with a friend yesterday, who has the molluscum skin virus on his neck. His mother did not advise me of the virus until she picked him up. They played all day outside and inside. What are the chances that he will come down with this virus? If he does, how long do they last? Thank you for your help....

Dear J.,

The Molluscum Contagiosum Virus is a very weak one. Unless your child has a weaker than "normal" immune system, it would be impossible for him to "catch" it.

Because it is such a weak virus, he would also have to have VERY close & prolonged contact even then.

There was someone this past month who reported spontaneous resolution of MCV. I have never seen it unless the person practices a wellness program to improve the immune system.

See if you can find the note on the unarchived BB.

I tried to buy comfrey at a three local health food stores. Two of them never of it. The last one told me that comfrey is no longer on the market! I did however find on the internet a "comfrey oinment" which I ordered.

My question to Dr. Stoll is that you mentioned about a wellness program. What is that specifically? I would be much interested in finding about it. My goal is to build up my daughter's immune system. I realize that is where the molluscum keeps thriving on. I have been giving my daughter echinacea every day. I have been giving her one capsule at 400 mg a day. She is six and 40 pounds. Should I be giving her more than that? We have been eating three healthy meals a day and also taking a multivitamin. Again, if you can give me any input on a wellness program I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Hi, Cheryl.

One of the reasons for the "glossary" is to clarify stuff like you are asking about "wellness" (see link). Also, there is a specific article about wellness on the home page for this 'site.

Finally, I offer a free protocol, with references, about wellness, for a stamped, self-addressed #10 envelope sent to my publisher at Sunrise Health Coach, Box #12091, Panama City, FL 32401-9091. Be sure you include what you are sending the envelope for.

THEN, if you still have questions, write again. If you have these questions, so must many others. Discussing it publically is the best tool for public education I know.

I noticed that I had these small white bumps about a week ago and went to the clinic to get it checked. They said that I had Molluscum and then they burned it. I just read that you could get rid of it with comfrey and they didn't tell me anything about it. What is it, how effective is it, where can I get it, and how much does it cost?

I wanted to comment that I got comfrey ointment from www.herbsfirst.com today in the mail. It came in three days priority mail. I was unsuccessful in getting any form of liquid comfrey on the internet or at a local health food store. It you look up comfrey on yahoo it will tell you exactly what comfrey is. At this point, I do not know if it will help but I will keep you updated.

Also, I am also taking my daughter to a homeopathic doctor in my town who can treat molluscum successfully as well as putting her on a "wellness" (nutriotnal diet) program. Your first step in getting rid of molluscum is to build up your immune system.

I am writing because my three children have this virus. Two of them have had it for 4 months and 1 for 2 weeks. They are 6, 4 and 2. The 6 year old only has two on his cheek. The 4 year old has about 25 and my 2 year old has about 50!!(and they seem to be spreading more) I am so frustrated because a docter has tried to burn them of, and had me use retin A on them. Neither were successful. Now, a dermatologist has perscribed Aldara to try. I just tried filling the perscription today and the pharmacist said she couldn't give it to me if it was for a child!!! Help! Also, does comfrey really work? We do not know what to do now.(besides pray of course) The doc gave us a trial of this medication so we did start to use it already. Should we still try to pursue this Aldara even if it is not known if it is safe for kids or try Comfrey?? We do not feel safe with the Aldara, but we also cannot handle these warts spreading even more. If anyone can help us, it would be a tremendous blessing.

I was able to get comfrey ointment from www.HerbsFirst.Com/Ointments.html. It seems to be working for my daughter. It brings the wort to a head and then it looks like a pimple and then it goes away. Maybe where some people live they can get liquid comfrey from a local health food store. I was unable to get it so that was why I ordered it from the internet. Hopefully this can help someone.

Hi, Joan.

For you all to have this weak virus infection, you HAVE to have a genetic weakness in this part of youir immunity. Until we can insert normal genes into the genome with viruses, you are stuck with the genes you have.

The only real solution to this is for all of you to develop a "wellness" mentality to improve your general immunity enough that even the weakness will not be weak enough for this virus to overcome.

Go to the homepage of this 'site & read about wellness.

THEN, if you still have questions, write again.

Hi, Bassam.

I don't know how to explain it better. AIDS does not cause MC & MC does not cause AIDS. A lowered immunity causes both. A person with a great immune system could not get AIDS. This is explained in a chapter about AIDS in my book.

The many posts about MC have not yet been archived. SO, they are still on the BB. People have been saying that Comfrey gets rid of MC lesions. I have not heard enough about that yet but it can't hurt while you are learning more. There were notes here about the comfrey within the past 48 hours.

If any one can answer this question, I will greatly appreciate your response.
