Once and for all...does alcohol really have enough...

Posted by Luci on May 10, 2002 at 13:24:58:

health benefits to offset the negatives associated with consuming it?

I am in a great debate with a friend who insists that everyone should have an ounce or two daily to reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

My thinking is that alcohol use on a daily basis has some negative cumulative effects...but am I wrong to feel this way?

Do the positives offset the negatives as far as ingesting an average of 14 ounces a week. I hope that I can get some reasonable responses since I wouldn't mind having a couple of daily cocktails IF it really is good for me.

I am a middle aged lady who thought I was doing well by only sticking to healthy foods and various nutrients to make my body healthier and now I am being bombarded with information that is giving me cognitive dissonance. Is alcohol really beneficial for daily use, after all?

Thanks for any responses.....

A couple of daily cocktails is too much alcohol. Since the body can only de-tox two ounces of booze a day, that kind of drinking will get you into big trouble. One, four ounce glass of red wine is good for our blood and blood pressure. Personally, I have a glass of red wine once a week, and use oatmeal and green vegies for the rest.

I only drink when I feel the desire. It only seems to come
when I am under severe stress which is rare. I was never a
big drinker and don't handle it well but that might be
because I am not stressed or that I handle stress well or
avoid it instead of looking for it. I wouldn't do something
that didn't feel right.

Hi, Luci,
I think that the general consensus is that if you are already consuming alcohol on a daily basis, it is safe to continue as long as you don't consume more that one or two drinks a day; and that it could even be healthy according to some studies. However, if you are not in the habit of drinking alcohol it is not a good idea to start just because of any health factors which may or may not be there.
That's the way I have understood it. Raisa

Hi, Luci,

Listen to Raisa & Gramma II.

ALL substances are poisons in a high enough dose. The trick is to consume the right dose.

It currently looks like about 1 ounce of ethanol a day is helpful. That means 2 ounces of 100 proof alcohol or 8 ounces of red wine. The true facts may be known in another 20 years. No one has studied this long enough to know what this does over 20+ years.

I know of no studies that show that alcohol is an essential human nutrient.

Hope this helps.

Walt
