Hi Dr Stoll and everyone,
A friend(male, 31 years old, no antecedents of oral
problems), after a heavy drinking party (rum, wine, etc),
told that he had a burning sensation in the tip of the
tongue, I check his mouth and I saw that the tip of the
tongue was red and the papillae inflamated, then he
went to his doctor and the doctor told him that heavy
drinking can cause tongue cancer, is that true?, my
friend is terrified, any advice to deal with the tongue
irritation? Thx in advance. Best regards.

Hi, Alexandra.
His doc is right but only after years of doing it.
The most likely cause from this episode is vitamin B deficiency which is also directly caused by heavy drinking.
It seems to me that your friend has reached the end of his heavy drinking episodes--without consequences.
His next warnings will not likely be so benign.
