For the Chiropractors- please read

Posted by Steve on October 09, 2002 at 14:04:20:

I have been seriously passively pursuing SR for about a month now and have been seeing a chiropractor for about 2 months. I have had many stress related problems, one of which is a pain on the lower right flank. Recently I noticed that the ribs on my right side were flatter than the ribs on the left. Today I went to the chiro and he said that it was from twisting in the spine. After my adjustment, the ribs became even again. Hooray! I am under the suspicion that the spine will twist again. I noticed before that when I breathed (and especially during SR) that I felt constricted on the right side. I am under the belief that poor posture and sitting habits are to blame (leg crossing, sitting on my leg and winding up on my stomach/ right side when I sleep) Are there any exercises that anyone knows that I can do daily that will help keep the spine straight and prevent it from twisting up again?
Thank you for your response
Steve

I'm not a chiropractor but I thought I'd make a suggestion. Try getting Awareness through Motion by Feldenkrais. It has some very nice exercises in it that makes you aware of how you are holding your body and therefore helping you keep it in balance.

That sounds interesting. Is it a book? Video?

Thanks,

Hi Nutmeg! I did Feldenkrais body work in a group and one on one. It is truly amazing for teaching the body to rethink itself. It corrects many structural problem and is also used for stroke victims. I think what BararaN is referring to is a book.

Hi Naya. My massage therapist sometimes does a little Feldenkrais during our sessions and I find it very relaxing and effective at relieving pain and relaxing muscle tension. I'd like to know more about it, so I will look further.

Thanks,
Nutmeg

Sorry, I made a mistake in the title of the book. Its Awareness through movement. What I have is a book about the Feldenkrais technique written by Feldenkrais. When I first came to this site, I had a lot of bracing issues and lots of stiff muscles. Dr Stoll recommended the feldenkrais and alexander technique alot. I couldn't find practioners of either here in the Netherlands so I bought books on both. I found the feldenkrais one better than the alexander technique book. Some concepts were a bit difficult to understand cause they almost seemed like a lesson in physics which I was never good in hahaha But overall I thought it was great and it helped alot. Here is an example:

Scan the state of your body:

Lie down on your back. Place your legs a comfortable distance apart. Stretch your arms out above your head, slightly apart, so that the left arm will be approximately in a straight line with the right leg and the right arm in line with the left leg.

Close your eyes and try to check the areas of the body that are in contact with the floor. Pay attention to the manner in which the heels lie on the floor, whether the pressure upon them is equal, and whether the point of contact is at exactly the same points in both heels. In the same way examine the contact made with the floor by the calf muscles, the back of the knees, the hip joints, the floating ribs, the upper ribs, and the shoulder blades. Pay attention to the respective distances between the shoulders, elbows and the floor.

He goes on to say that in most people the two sides of the body won't be in line and that it may even be difficult for some people to maintain that position long enough to do the scan. He mentions that if you lay a skeleton without muscles on the floor, that all the vertebrae would come in contact with the floor. Its our muscles and how we use them (unconsciously)that keeps the vertebrae from coming in contact with the floor.

He says its impossible to stretch out the entire spine on the floor without a conscious strain upon several areas. As soon as this conscious effort is released, the effected areas will once again move up and away from the floor. In order to stop this and get the whole spine on the floor, we have to stop the work that the muscles are doing without our knowledge. Then he goes on to give some indirect methods/exercises to help.

Anyone that's just one example out of the book. If you do a search for feldenkrais, I'm sure you'll get a lot more information.
