ok- so I went to the allergist for a food allergy test....

Posted by c. elizabeth [117.74] on July 24, 2004 at 15:53:55:

I went to the allergist for a food allergy test...(back scratch) an interestingly enough I was allergic to numerous things (barley, navy beans, string beans, green beans, broccoli, celery, corn, oat, olives, onions, oranges, sweet potatoes, white potatoes, raspberries, tomoatoes, watermelon, catfish, scallops) My allergist was aware I am on an elimination diet, an even though i didnt know what i was allergic to, i had already eliminated many of the foods found to be allergens. But she said she wants me to start adding them back NOW? I have only been on the elimination diet for a little over a week.. an results are coming slowly but surely. My question: i DONT want to add back anything im allergic to! I have enough problems already from consistently eating stuff i was allergic to. So what do i do? is it safe to continue elimination? (i dont have a wide variety of food options, because i have a severe intolerance for anything with more than a few carbs (even veggies with high carb content make me feel horrible) an to top it all off, now i find im allergic to lots of the veggies i was eating.. im beginning to feel theres nothing I can eat safely, yet i am trying so hard to get healthy again, but i feel im at a dead end with food options. any advice? thanks guys! -caroline

Hi Caroline. I can relate totally to what you are going through. I am in the same situation as you are. I have about ten things I can eat and can't eat any veggies with carbs in them.

Did you get antigens for any of these foods you are allergic to? What kind of allergy testing did you do? If I were you, I think I'd stick with the elimination diet for a while longer. After all, you are the one living inside your body and can sense what's going on with it more than any doctor or allergist can. This has always been a problem for me. I can feel what my body is doing and at times I have had allergic reactions to my allergy shots when my allergist says this is impossible. This happened mainly when I was doing acupuncture at the same time that I was giving myself shots. When I quit the acupunture, it didn't happen any more, but nobody believed me.

Hope this helps a little. I'm sure you'll get more input from others on the board.

Best wishes,
Naya

no, i didnt get any antigens, do you think that would be a good idea? i told her i didnt want any meds (im so sick of meds, ive finally gotten off mine, yay!! ) but if they are safe an would help, maybe i should have? the testing she did was she took those little needle like things an scracted my back, an measured the mark it left. (she tested 96 different foods i think) and then should took some blood, not sure what she was testing with that, but i requested a blood serum test for gluten especially,, as i have a hard time with it.

naya- what veggies do you eat? basically right now im only eating zuchinni, spinach salads, an lots of collard greens..

Hi! I did a special kind of allergy testing especially designed for people with environmental illness. They give you increasing doses of the substance or food they are testing, measure your reactions and then "clear" you. You then also have to wait 24 hours and then report back if you have any red welts on the injections sites. Then they make up an antigen for you which you give to yourself every fours days. It consists of a very small amount of the thing you tested positive for. Once you're done with a certain group of things, they can combine them in one shot. I forget what this method is called. I think Sapphire might know. Why don't you post to her.

As far as what I can eat for veggies: asparagus, zucchini and avocadoes sometimes. That's it. I can't even eat broccoli or cauliflower any more because they cause so much bloating. And for protein, I eat beef sometimes (organic), wild salmon and organic turkey and chicken. Great menu, huh?

I hope this helps. The allergy testing that I'm describing is pretty time consuming, but it is very effective. I forgot to mention that after a while, you can start adding foods back into your diet.

I am confused as to why the MD would want you to add the stuff you are allegic to back into your diet? Did she explain why?

Hi, C.

In my opinion, anyone who goes to a regular allergist for allergy testing is wasting their time and money.

All clinical ecologists are also board certified allergists but had a lot more training and understanding about the problem.

I think that after taking the antigens for a while, your body is able to tolerate those foods again, but only on a rotated basis. Some things, I guess, you would have to elminate completely, though. I'll have to ask her the next time I see her. I've been doing non-food things, so I don't know too much about the food aspect of the testing. I've been doing testing for molds, grass, trees, etc.

That was certainly my experience with a regular allergist, Dr. Stoll, I couldn't
agree with you more. Worthless.

I agree Walt, it's a total waste of time and money to see a traditional allergist.
