Hi, Michele.

Iodine is an essential trace nutrient! By government decree, most peo;le use salt that has traces of iodine added to prevent a form of goitre. There has never been a hue and cry about complications in the millions of people who have been exposed to this supplement for nearly 100 years now. There are RARE individuals who are sensitive to excesses of this substance.

Anyone who lives far enough away from the seashore will eventually be iodine deficient and thyroid function will begin to suffer.

Walt

So, Potassium Iodide form would be ok for someone who is possibly (said with sarcasm) allergic to Iodine?
I had a reaction to shellfish once, but the allergist did MANY tests on me and showed I was not allergic. However, it could have been the bacteria in the crab (it was bad) that gave me hives.
I'm just concerned about taking too much.

Hi Michele:

You may have a shellfish allergy and still be able to take supplements containing minute amounts of iodine. I discovered I had a shellfish allergy this past summer. The allergist suggested I could still eat shellfish if I did not exhibit any adverse reaction. Since I've never seen any sort of bad reaction, I still eat shellfish on rare occasions.

The only strange reaction I noticed from iodine was when I had a scan which required an iodine injection in the arm. I immediately had a panicky feeling which hampered my breathing. This reaction could have been psychological. I'll never know. But I was still able to regain composure and complete the scan without further problems.

Thanks..

I do think it was less the iodine and more the bacteria that I reacted to, however, yes I do know what you mean.
I was tested positive allergy for corn, but still eat many corn products (luckily, I don't like it that much anyway!)
...and I have been fine.

Michele,

With this history I would give it a try. If you have no reaction within a day I would stop worrying about it.

Walt
