Ugh the itch is back!!!!!!!

Posted by Hope [1618.1575] on March 05, 2005 at 22:10:46:

So a few months ago I reported that I was having an allergic reaction. After about a week I determined it was Bounce fabric softener.

Over Christmas I went to my mother's house. I had another reaction and sure enough, she used Bounce in the house.

So definately allergic to Bounce!

Anyway, I am having another attack. I went the Whole Foods Market and got some of their detergent. I was speaking with the man in the herbs department and he said that the bounce could have gotten me so sensitive to it that now I could be sensitive to Gain. I have used Gain for about 10 years now.

Everytime I put a shirt on I break out. Could I now be allergic to Gain?

Wish me luck on washing EVERYTHING in my house tonight and tomorrow :( :( :(

Hi Hope! A friend of mine uses Gain and every time I see him I almost choke on the perfume I can smell still coming from his Gain-washed clothing.

Maybe you should try something with less perfume, or perfume and dye free. They are out there.

Good luck!

I'm allergic to Bounce, too.

Thanks Naya :)

I went to Whole Foods and got some non-dye, non-perfume detergent. I have been washing my clothes since my post...only 2 loads done :(

There is absoloutely no smell and I am a little sad cause I do like a little smell.

Are there any other good detergents out there that will give me a little bit of a clean, fresh smell that won't make me itch like mad?

Thanks again for the post :)

The most straightforward cleaning soap is trisodium phosphate. I use this most of the time. It is not very expensive, and gives no smell, and works well. We don`t need the smell since it is a coverup. If you have a perfume you like, and doesn`t bother you, use it when you use the clothes.

I use ECOS laundry detergent and Ecover fabric softener, which I get from my local health food store. ECOS has a wonderful smell, but I don't react to it. I normally don't do well either with anything perfumy at all, and I definitely cannot do Bounce or Downy (even though for years I could). Can't even wear perfumes.

He said if you are just coming off of a reaction, you need to avoid anything LIKE that reactive substance for a few weeks AND continue to take zyrtec or something...it's urticia (sp) and is hyper inflamed.
Use the least amount of soap that you can, and the most hypoallergenic ...and see how that goes with the meds and avoidance. Bet you'll be fine.
Also - check out your gut...all allergies are a result of this.

Hope,

Bleach could be causing problems, too (if you use it, that is).

Hope,

The name of this game is: "Simply discovering what you are reacting to, and eliminating it, is nothing but a short term solution for most people."

You have to learn how this happens (LGS) and get busy eliiminating the cause. Your alternative will be finally living in a glass cube and being fed minced platypus through a glass straw.

Thanks everyone :)

My favorite thing to do is take a hot bubble bath, spray on some perfume, and get into my bed with fresh clean sheets :)

If I couldn't do that anymore I don't know what I would do :(

Today I am not nearly as itchy. I am hoping it was just the Gain and now that it is eliminated I will be ok.

Thanks so much again :)

I use bounce and Gain... I hadnt thought of them as the culprit to my current sensitivities( I used them because they were the only ones I wasn't reacting too..

Guess I will get started on the new cleaning product search for me and hope it is that simple( I been trying to isolate the food I thought I was reacting to)

Hi Hope,

I use Bio-Kleen laundry liquid. It's very concentrated and has a very light, fresh odor. No added chemical fragrance...it comes from the natural citrus-y ingredients.

Definitely lose the Gain and bounce the Bounce, which is just chemically fragranced plastic coating on your pretty clothes :o)

It's getting a lot better, but I still get ill from being around people wearing scented clothes, and it really lingers if someone is in my car, standing in my house, or sitting on my furniture. I even smell it on my skin and clothes when I've been with someone who's fragranced, and even just walking by someone is a big hit. When I buy something from the consignment shop, I have to wash it 6 times to get the laundry *stink* out of it.

Once you get all that fragrance out of your system, you will enjoy the smell of freshly laundered clothes and you won't miss your perfumed detergent at all. If you want something fresh-smelling, hang some laundry outdoors. Nothing from a factory can smell that good!

Wishing you the best,
Nutmeg
