Swallowing/Sinus problem

Dear Dr. Stoll,
For years I have suffered with a bad swallowing problem. I need to swallow every 10 or 15 seconds. I have developed very bad heartburn/acid/stomach pain over the last few years and sometimes wake up at night because of it. I am putting it down to constant saliva swallowing. I also find though that one of my nasal passages is permanently blocked. I feel that everytime I swallow half of what I swallow goes up that passage. This whole problem I used to put down to nervousness but I do it on my own aswell, and in the company of my best friends. I have been telling myself to see a doctor and have something done about it for the past 2 years but I dont know. Do you think I should see someone? Have you ever heard of this problem before? i flunked school because of this and took a job out on the road by myself just to get away from people. Any help you can give me on this is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Matty

Matty,

I have some similar symptoms as you ...
mucus and saliva in throat and difficulty breathing. Not much of the stomach pain but sometimes I feel I get acid reflux, but I cant tell.

I think it would be a good idea to get each otehrs emails.
Do you use the email you listed in your note? If so I'll write you an email.

I have had my condition for 10 years now; and I have done alot of research on my condition and paid many a doctor to try to help me; perhaps we can figure somethings out.

What has always worked with all my patients on sinus problems is off all wheat products [it is in a lot of foods], you would need to check products in the beggining a person needs to be very strict If you stay off all wheat, dairy and fried foods, for a good 15 days, you should see some results; Also you might want to look into wild oreganio capsuals; Try it and let me know how you do;

hey dude,i think you should see a stoache doc,and get scoped. i had no stomache problems,just inus problems and breathing probs,i went to all docs,then to stomache guy. i got scoped,and i have barretts esophogus which is pre cancerous. i never had heartburn,and this is from long standing reflux,that i never felt. i still have sius problems,deviated septum,and much mucous,it doesnt come uup though. im getting heartburn bad,after starting on meds, (ridiculous) i trying to figuren out if the sinus problem caused the reflux,from constant swallowng post nasal,and burping from air swallowing,or the reflux caused the sinus problem. i have done alot of research,but im unable to find a solution. imready to get the sinus surgery, i was getting the reflux surgery,and i got sck,sinus infection again. i have the deviated septum,so sinus surgry might help. i will find a answer soon. but be careful,swallowing disorders are serious,dont ignore it,get scoped

I wouldn't be surprised if your problems were mainly due to chronic tension. I have very similar things associated with long-term anxiety, and have become aware that when I am under stress my throat becomes tight and my nose blocked. Try practising relaxation regularly twice a day to see if things improve. At worst its free and won't do you the damage that drugs/surgery will, at best you could transform your life! I have been practising the relaxation now for 3 months, regularly twice a day, and am becoming generally much less tense. You don't realise until things change how tight your whole body has been! Look at the article about Skilled Relaxation for more information, or search the archives under relaxation and anxiety. Hope this helps.

Terri-Lynn,

I'm afraid its a little more complicated then that ...
I tried going on a elimination diet 2 years ago. Didnt eat wheat for a month, milk for 3 months, and fried food for hmmm 3-4 weeks.
I got no discernable results in regards to me breathing problems.

I also went on a anti-candida diet and supplimentaion program a couple months ago. Ate a strict anti-candida diet; took various natural anti-candida items
including:
GSE in liquid form and tablet
MSM, biotin, caprylic acid, probiotics, fish oil ...
kyolic (garlic)

I'm not left with too much to try now. The main thing I'm thinking is that I need surgery to give me more breathing through my nose (turbinates and diveated septum); and possiably look into a chronic sinus infection (but I dont have many of the symptoms that chronic sinus infections are supposed to have ie no fever or sinus pressure or ache).

Obviously eating healthy, exercise (of what I can do) and possiably mediation, staying away from harful triggers will help but I'm trying to find a 'cure' to my condition.

I had the same symptoms 4 years ago. Have your doctor test you for h-pilori bacterial, (which is in your stomach). A treatment of 3 types of antibiotics for 7 days took care of of my stomach problems. Also intestinal parasites. In some cases that are severe, parasites come up from your intestines and affect your lungs and throat. You then cough, and swollow and start the whole process over again. I took a parasite pill for 3 days. I feel much better. The swollowing has gone.

I had a doctor tell me once that there were two surgeries he'd never get..sinus surgery and back surgery. My brother had the sinus surgery to give him more room. It didn't help. I was told by the ENT that I have a very small nose but not to ever let anyone operate on it. I have constant sinus problems but I find if I use a saltwater spray and keep it moist then I do much better. I also put a little GSE in the solution because I'm 99% sure that mold is the cause and not bacteria. Good luck!

Hi, Matty.

Actually, I used to have the plugged (one side of the nasal passages problem) "sinuses". I found out that I was hypersensitive to dairy and wheat. Within a few days if total elimination of both, I got relief. Now, when I give up, and have my 2 most favorite things, within a day I start plugging up again and it takes a few days of abstainence to again be OK.

This may not be YOUR problem but, surely it is a more common thing than conventional medicine imagines and is free for anyone to test. What do you have to lose but your plugged nasal passage?

The swallowing thing is most likely a nervous "tic" and would have to be addresed by dealing with stored stress. THEN, when that has been discharged, you will still have the habit to break but then, at least, it will be possible.

Let us know what happens.

Walt

Hi, Terri-Lynn.

We both said the same thing without collusion.

I would like to take this opportunity to, once again, express my appreciation for your helping people on this BB.

You bring a perspective that, many times, I do not have.

Namaste`

Hi, Sean.

Humans are NOT machines. ANY of the suggestion on this BB are just that, suggestions. They would not be suggested if they had not worked for a significalt % of people with that problem. Some people will get resuts and others not. Since something like this is easy to check and free, what does the person have to lose by trying it?

Your personal experience should not discourage all from trying it since it is only your personal experience which cannot be denied.

Dr. Stoll,

Maybe you misunderstood me. I wasnt trying to discourage Matty from doing what he/she (not sure if matty is a girl or boys name) can do to help. I was being hmm discouraging to myself because many of the things I have tried didnt help and I was possiably looking for advise etc ...

Thank You i appreciate you sharing that, sometimes i wonder why i put so much time into this board at night, but then i remember planting seeds and watching them grow, oh how you love that also; If one seed takes root it is worth it and if it is me learning from this board, which i continue to do, it is worth it; I will be leaving Maui finally,-after working three months here. Back to towards Florida on Monday;

Remember what we did months ago does not help us now, sounds like awareness is a key-aware of everything your being exposed to would help; I hope you are not a smoker; Perhaps drinking the saline solution would also help, it has helped many; You put 1/4 tsp. to a quart of good drinking water; Of a good solar sea salt; Also have you tried getting an air filter for your house, perhaps toxins also are contributing;
