antibiotics for 2 month old?

Posted by Denise on April 09, 2001 at 14:06:02:

dr. stoll, here is the situation: baby is 2 months old and 100% breastfed. she developed nasal congestion last week and lung congestion a couple of days ago. she is coughing frequently and productively and sounds wheezy. she has no fever, is nursing fine and is otherwise her usual cheerful self. the doctor prescribed a cough expectorant, albuterol (only if she starts to have problems breathing), and an antibiotic as a preventive measure. i don't know whether to give her the antibiotic. i know that if she doesn't have a bacterial infection it's useless, but i know that if she does get one it could be dangerous because she's so young. what would you advise? thank you, denise

Hi, Denise.

This is allergy and any doc who does not recognize it does not deserve your trust. With no fever, the antibiotic can only do harm since it can do NO good. Since you are breastfeeding it is likely something that YOU are eating.

The most likely things are dairy, wheat, soy, eggs, peanuts-----a list that has a certain order to it but the order changes as the dietary culture changes. Soy is a new one so high on the list.

If you cannot resolve her problem by manipulating YOUR diet (see the elimination/provocation protocol in the archives--or use the search engine for it) you will need a Clinical Ecologist--not a simple allergist. See the glosary as to how to find one.

Let us know how she does.

Walt

thank you, dr. stoll. i haven't given her the antibiotic, i was very uncomfortable with that. the only food on your list that i eat with regularity is wheat, so i'll start with that. the others i'm either allergic to or just don't eat much. i'll let let you know how she is in a few weeks. denise
