update on congested infant

Posted by Denise on April 20, 2001 at 18:35:55:

hi dr. stoll, here is an update on my baby girl: i eliminated wheat from my diet, but so far her wheezing has become worse. i took her to the doctor today for a recheck and she said it's definitely an allergy because she hasn't gotten better. now i have to give her albuterol via a nebulizer because the oral medicine isn't working well.

even before i went today, i decided to eliminate all grains and the other allergenic foods you listed (some, like dairy, i wasn't eating anyway). the doctor says it will take a week or two to see results. i won't be giving her solids until she's at least six months, and will breastfeed her for at least 2 years.

i have a couple questions: what is the mechanism for this reaction? does the baby have the allergy or is she reacting to the antibodies formed by my own allergy?

much thanks, as always, for sharing your knowledge, denise

Hi, Denise.

The baby has the allergy!

Remember that this would not be happening to her unless her gut was leaking already in her tender age. By far, the most common cause at this age is that her bacterial ecology of the gut has not yet been established.

If she were mine, I would be finding the broadest spectrum of the highest quality probiotics on the market and give her at least double the adult dose for a few weeks. You could give her several bottles of the stuff all at once, without any possiblility of harm.

Let us know how she does. The results can be dramatic and immediate at this age.

Walt
