First of all do an elimination diet, get him on some vitamins, check for allergies, put him on a whole foods diet, AND reduce the stress in his life. You may not be able to get him to do SR, but you can reduce stress in his life, and spend lots of time with him. I find with my son who was "hyper", the diet alone does wonders, but the biggest change was when I was calm, and spent quality time with him. I found I needed to change MY way of dealing with him, and he improved greatly. SR for you and him, will do wonders.
Good Luck

It's a shame that a doctor would prescribe this sort of "medication" for a young boy.

Curious does your son drink a lot of soft drinks, Cola's?

Thank You for posting the side effects of drug,Anon,
Tammy thanks, looking into allergies to what he is drinking and eating. Suspect a chemical that he is ingesting having a causitive effect.

My son was really awful. We thought he would have to be in residential treatment. None of the doctors had a clue (thought he may be bipolar or autistic, but had to wait til he got older as he is adopted & we don't know history -- they don't diagnose this stuff in young children unless you have family history).

Do a search on this board's archives for "straw" & I think you'll find our story, or do a search for "brain chemistry" I think.

Anyway, read these books:

"Is this your child" by Doris Rapp
"Unraveling the Mysteries of Autism & PDD" by Karyn Seroussi (helps ADD kids, too)
"The LCP Solution"

For anxiety, I'll guess your child has too many carbonated beverages. Cut them all out.

For hyperactivity, he needs to heal his digestive system. Have to go to a whole foods diet, vitamin supplementation and this means cut out all dyes & preservatives. You'll notice a huge difference by making him get off all sugared drinks and make him drink water.

My son has done at least a 200% improvement with a gluten free, casein free diet. www.gfcfdiet.com (I think).

good luck.

Buy Karyn's book. It is the easiest to read & understand book which will explain most of it to you ...

I can only tell you what helped my ex-boyfriend. (now in the process of completing a computer-electrical engineering degree)

1) no sugar
2) EFAs
3) 9 hours of sleep

I could never get him off grains or into SR, but I saw a HUGE change from just these three factors.

Thanks, Velvet.

Now, why is not something like this the first thing recommended??? It will not work for everyone but is safe effective and inexpensive. The most potent prescription drug only works for 66% of patients!
