FYI: Junk Food in Schools-Watchdog Group

Targeting Junk Food in Schools:

Hoping to stem the national epidemic of childhood obesity, a commercial watchdog group has launched a campaign to ban the marketing, distribution and sale of junk food in U.S. schools.

The campaign by the national nonprofit organization Commercial Alert has the backing of top nutrition and obesity experts, public health associations and national public interest centers, including the American College of Preventive Medicine and the Center for Media Education.

Commercial Alert sent a childhood obesity prevention agenda in early April to leaders of state legislative education committees and to chief public health and education officers nationwide, asking them to act.

The agenda claims that "purveyors of junk food increasingly are able to use public schools as a platform for their marketing campaigns... Parents should guide the eating habits of their kids. Corporations have no business wedging into that relationship."

Commercial Alert calls on schools to encourage healthful eating and exercise and on state and local official to:

-prohibit the marketing and sale of junk food in schools (in vending
machines and food advertisements) and

-give financial rewards to schools and food service agencies that exceed
federal nutrition guidelines and obey restrictions on junk food sales

Commercial Alert's mission is to prevent commercialism "from exploiting children and subverting the higher values of family, community, environmental integrity and democracy." The group boasts more than 2,000 members from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

It's Web site, www.commercialalert.org, asks parents to urge Congress to support Commercial Alert's Parents' Bill of Rights, which seeks to
prevent large corporations from influencing children through commercialism.

I have been hoping for this for a while! Our school - an elementary school - has introduced GUMMY TREATS as well as other "snacks" to our children, to no avail from parents. It claims that they "have no control" over the food corp they use... even if your child brown bags to school, there is the marketing and propaganda to purchase or share, these horrible snacks... and I won't even get into the unhealthy "lunches" that are offered. This is a real problem...and I will be on that website - Thank You.

Thanks, R.

I have been promoting this for nearly 30 years now. I am glad to hear that it is becoming organized!

Namaste`

Walt
