Dr. Stoll can high IQ be maintained? Brain kept at maxium?

Posted by lovebird [6.3291] on January 14, 2010 at 08:07:54:

Hi there Walt:
How are you doing?
Are you ok?
Has the weather bothered you much?
What are your thoughts on Haiti?

Question about IQ...if it is very high in youth does it stay the same?
Also do you believe we can improve brain health?

I have about 5 books here I have been studying this subject and would like your view.

Lovebird,

There is a old saying, " If you don't use it, you lose it."

If you don't use your brain, it begins to srink with age. So keep using your grey matter and they will call you a smart old bird :)

Where have you been?
Out in the cold on the road?

I do have a high IQ but was asking for those like doctors and all because they have on going classes, ways to qualify for things etc.

I like that "smart old bird" thanks...hahha

Actually what I have been reading is about nutrition, good thoughts vs negative, fish oil stuff like that and even have seen things like board games, puzzles, hobbies being important as we age.

How are you?

Jenny
Thanks soooooooo much
Actually in my family my older brother was and still is mega brain brilliant and I always thought he was soooooooo boring and I was full of personality and fun.

One day up in an attic room my Mother built he hung a plane up.."so what do you want to do with your life " I asked him...build airplanes

"What do you want to do"? He asked me "Just like a lot of people".

Well guess what? He built the F16=F14 for years and is a brilliant engineer and what do I do best??? Hummmmmmm
well I still love all kinds of people.

Silly because as time goes by I adore him and we talk more
So calling me a smart old bird today makes me feel positively brialliant..hahahaha

Thanks

Hey, Love(smart old)Bird.

I have been watching your posts, with glee, now for years. It seems to me that you are doing pretty well keeping your brain functional.

My only measured I.Q. was 152. Bill's is something over that (a Mensa Member). Even at that the estimation is that we use less than 1% of our total brain potential!

In my opinion, if we survive as a species, 1000 years from now we will be using 10-15% of our brains. It is the greatest, wasted, resource on the planet!

Of course it is just like muscles: "Use it or lose it!" However, just like life itself, there is a limit as to how long we can hold onto our faculties and I.Q. is one of our faculties. SO, the healthier we can keep our bodyminds, the longer we will maintain our "faculties"--each faculty is lost at different rates. We all know people who seem to get sharper as long as they live. Short of brain injury, intention can do us at least that well.

So far as Haiti is concerned. Keeping our reserves to help our fellow man, when tragedy strikes, is what we should be doing rather than squandering our might trying to force other cultures into our national mould until we have no reserves left.

Personally, I have been doing better than I have had any expectation of doing.

Walt, on Scientific American Frontiers, brain scientists are thinking we use our whole brains, and it is always using areas that handle other functions to do what is needed at that time.

You know, there also used to be articles in supposedly intellectual journals, insisting that the earth was obviously flat and that the universe revolved around the earth. If we only could be a fly on the wall 1000 years from now.....

Walt
I have no idea what I am doing on this BB but being myself...

So I appreciate your reading with glee...

Well I have found in the health issue that the mind is so powerful and actually we need to have a made-up mind every day.
I am just like one brother who thinks such nice thoughts is always pleasant and happy..I guess I am like that a lot.
I just find so much to be thankful for every day.

But as negative words were spoken to me about arthritis and I did listen but instantly made up my mind about how I would live my life.

But looking back concerning brain power I would make up my mind to make an A or B before I took the class or why take it...

I have accomplished so many things just like that...add a prayer to that and nothing is impossible right?

Our Air Force from Fort Dix lands there tomorrow to handle the air port in Haiti...love our military always and my country. Had a godfather that was a Commander in the Navy and a dentist.

Love seeing so many nations coming together to help the people of Haiti.

So it is ok for me to write here? On YOUR BB? wow now that is an honor.

Love to you
Lovebird

Philly, that type of IQ test is not to be taken seriously, it's very crude... I don't even think the MENSA IQ test is very credible. Intelligence is very complex, how do you begin to test it? I personally think there may be different types of intelligence - logical, emotional, practical, creative etc. how do you begin to test and credit the intricaies of human thought and ability? Don't think it's possible.

You're right, it's not a serious I.Q. test. It's just something to do for quick fun. But the questions do make you exercise the old brain cells:-)

Yes, there are different types of intelligence. And I believe some types cannot be measured (yet) by conventional means. Why...Homeopathy is type of intelligence, don't you know? Wink, wink!

My question was really about an engineer like my brother or doctor or teacher or counselor because I know so many and they go to classes all the time and take courses galore and seminars and so my question is about increasing knowledge and intelligence...

I'd rather stay young...
Funny girl I am
I like to do and talk about all kinds of things especially since I have cabin fever and my shelves are clean and I can't wait for Spring...

Thanks
I feel valuable
Being a friend of yours proves I must have some qualities and be positively brilliant...now that is funny

Well life does give us challenges

Shape said something to me a few years ago when I was talking about the Olympic athletes and how much I admire them. He said back "they couldnt stand 5 minutes inside your body"..

Well it is all ok isnt' it? If you live a full life and have done so many things with much more to do a body weak in an area is ok.

When I think back to the years and years of pounding my knees and joints in sports and walking I would do things differently..I never heard of wear and tear anything..

It doesn't take much for me to appreciate everything.

And if makes me laugh when people get a big head or have this elevated view of what they can do or who they are when in fact you cant do much at all..it is funny isnt it?

I am proud of you too.

The number 1% or 10% is some what miss leading. I have read that much of our brain is used to control every cell in our bodies. So if we have 70 billion cells, the brain has much to do. I also read the only cells the brain doesn't control are cancer cells.

I read that we use 100% of our brain, just not all of it at the same time.

Different parts of our brain are for different things....

The q. of 1% or 10% does seem overly simplistic though. How the brain organizes itself seems key. You know, quality vs. quantity...

The information at this link (on 10% brain myth) seems good. But it seems incomplete, due to the vast peak, exceptional, mystical, and metanormal abilities which though not commonly used, clearly the brain is capable of. Go ahead materialists knock yourselves out. :-)

Sapphire,

Who knows? I have yet to hear any research indicating the locus of the spirit. MY guess is that it is the holographic representation of every single cell in the body! After all, the brain is only the switchboard and it is the bodymind as a whole that functions as the mystery that is our entirity.

Dr Gershon's classic "The Second Brain" is the first breakthrough I have seen in that direction. Keep tuned, more to come.

It is the Great Imponderable, Walt. Spirit defies thought and word, is
symbolized by flame and bird, shining in the eyes and received by the
heart and expressed through the senses by gestures and art. It is the
container and the contained, the bane of the brain, lived but unknown,
paradoxically arcane. Above and below and within and without, the
subject of creed and the specter of doubt. Our origin, our destination,
our Self revealed in transmigration.

So we just have to wait till the end to find out what it is all about.
Probably not much about percentages.

Thanks, k.

These concepts are so far beyond most people's daily experience they just tune them out whereas they are actually a little crack of opening the door to our greatly expanded understanding of the "Cosmic All".

As the religious conservatives desperately cling to the teachings of the church, they are blinded to the first concrete examples that open the understanding of the "God Concept". These people even still cling to the "creationist theory" of evolution when it is easily likely that this is the way the Cosmic Intelligence chose to create our species.

Oops. You caught me in my lecture persona.

I agree that most people tune out such thoughts because of their busy, and mundane lives; and because it is not the philosophy they were brought up on. It's ironic that while people think holography is far fetched and not relative, when in reality, it could probably explain a lot and answer a lot of questions. In my opinion it's an advancement in our scientific and spiritual understanding, and I guess most cultures just aren't ready for it yet.

The nice thing for me is that some years ago I became acquainted with a religious belief called "Science of the Mind" or "Religious Science", and holography is a perfect explanation for their basic tennant, which is that there is one universal mind, and that we are all just varying aspects of it. And according to that philosophy, that is why we are so interconnected and have the capability to communicate in a variety of ways, including telepathically.

I wish that holography and quantum mechanics could be explored more in this society, starting with grade school. When a person is introduced to topics at an early age, they don't seem so foreign.

Namaste,

k.

If our consciousness is connected to the cosmic consciousness--which is infinite, what is 1% of infinity? Okay, this is getting really "out there", but just pondering... :)

Hey, we all ponder, Sapphire, it is our nature (grinning), but alas
"Cosmic consciousness" (by whatever name one gives it) is
unquantifiable; however, the good news is that "It" can be related to
on a personal level. I am of the view that the lack of personal
spiritual relationship throughout the world is the bugaboo behind
the discontent and yearning that is of plague-like proportion in
humankind.

I can imagine a worldwide triumph of Spirit that comes from a
critical mass of individuals who have committed to the path of
enlightenment (also by whatever name one gives it). I think there
are many of us trying to do our part in that regard by spiritually
healing ourselves. Our planet is so fakakta and so in need of
healing.
