Scared....Memory Loss

Posted by Teresa [7053.7818] on April 30, 2010 at 13:42:09:

I'm 46 and my memory is the worst. I'm taking lithium carbonate because I was diagnosed twice as being bipolar. I had a bad childhood and remember some bad things. I've also had a stressful life and want to know if that can be part of it. I joined facebook and even though I wasn't popular, I can only remember about two people I went to school with and only recognize some of the names. Is that normal? I don't have a yearbook. That might help. My last job five years ago, I was in charge of an office of 112 employees. I can only remember about five names. I drank diet drinks with phenyalanine since I was eleven and occasionally drink them now. My insurance is the worst, and can't afford to get a brain scan. Please help. Ginko???

How much sleep do you get every night? Sleep is one of the best things you can do for your mind and your memory.
No I don't think it at all normal to only remember two names from highschool.

like the bad things you remember from your childhood, we only remember people who made an impression on us. I am thinking of the people I remember, and they all had something unique about them, even if just their names.

Hi,

I just wondered if you thought about typing into google "lithium carbonate and memory loss".....or going to a website like www.askapatient.com I think it is---or any medical website that gives side effects.

And then, I guess if you find that as a side effect I'm sure you know you have to ask your Doctor what he thinks before you quit the medicine, as it's dangerous to quit some medicines without help.

Just a thought. Another thought I had - once I had some bad memory loss when I was about 46 actually - which went away later and was drinking 15 diet drinks per day back then. (eek).......

Actually, you helped me, because I've noticed a little bit of memory problems lately and I've increased my soft drinks.

Of course, I'm 66 now and Alzheimer's runs in my family. But that memory loss I had in about 1976 went away in about 1980.

Hope this helps. Oh! This is just me, but I don't think a scan of my brain would have shown a thing back when I had that memory loss and drank soft drinks. Or even when a person has it due to meds. That is just my view, though.

I know Walt will have some good advice.

Once I saw a tv show about a man who couldn't remember names at all. He could remember everything else, but just not names. I think he was a successful businessman. The show said some people are like that.

Also there are tricks to remember names in self help books.

My lack of getting sleepy I think is part of being bipolar. I take valerian root to go to sleep and alternate with melatonin. I remember names, but not the people. A lot of people knew my because my step brother was in the same grade and was popular. I was nominated as a runner up for homecoming princess and it shocked me because I kept to myself in school and didn't really know most of these people. Now, they are coming out of the woodwork and I'm being nice back, but don't have a clue on most of them. I'm going to try and get a year book to hopefully jog my memory. Our house burnt down in high school and we lost our yearbooks and everything. I don't know if lithium carbonate could be doing it so much. I've had a lot of tragedies in my life and wonder if I've blocked stuff out. It's scary though.

Hi Teresa,

I wouldn't worry about it. I've met classmates from decades ago (I'm 58) and even though I remember most of their faces and names, many of them didn't remember mine, so I don't think it's abnormal. I don't think it's Alzhemer's.

Looking at yearbook can refresh your memory of them.

Joe

Barb (& Teresa).

There are many kinds of cerebral dysfunction of aging besides Alzheimers. These other causes are more common and more is knnown about treatment for them. Senile dementia is but one of these and improving brain nutrition is but one approach. See the brain chemistry archives.

Actually, if the problem is severe, seeing a brain phyysiologist who is complementary in her specialty, might be worth the investment.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt

Hi Teresa,

I've always had a poor memory, don't feel so bad. It is brain chemistry I think caused originally by some stress in my early years. Maybe the stress has caused it for you. I just don't worry about my memory any more. I write things down, and if I forget people's names, I say sorry.

Best wishes,
Jan
