aplastic anemia

Posted by grid on March 28, 2001 at 16:05:11:

Hi! I am a 29 year old female that was diagnosed with aplastic anemia 2 days ago. Right now I am pondering suggested treatment otions- ATG with cyclosporine & steroids, or bone marrow transplant. (There is a possibility of a match with a sibling.) Has anyone undergone ATG treatment? Side effects? Were you able to have a family afterward?

Hi. Sorry to hear about your health problems. I would think a bone marrow transplant would be your best option. My father had aplastic anemia about ten years ago which progressed into acute myeolytic leukemia. He eventually passted away. Because of his age, a bone marrow transplant was not an option, but at your age, it could be a life-saving option. I wish the best for you....

Hi, Elizabeth.

Although a bone marrow transplant CAN be lifesaving, it does NOTHING about why his own bonemarrow stopped working--does it? So long as the transplant is not the ONLY thing that is done, why not? Unless a Clinical Ecologist is brought in in consultation, the chaces of recurrance are very high.
