A friend of mine has a condition in which she has too much iron in her blood. Every so often her doctor takes some of
her blood out to alleviate the situation. Do any of you know what this condition is called? Is there any nutritional cure or treatment for it? Thanks, Jo.

It's called Hereditary Hemochromatosis. It is caused by a genetic mutation that causes the body to be unusually iron-retentive. This can be an advantage in places where the diet is low in red meat but high in whole grains and legumes, since these foods are also high in phytates which block the absorption of minerals. Where the diet is high in red meat and low in phytates, however, it can be deadly. The only treatment is fairly frequent bloodletting.
The link below has lots of information about it.

So bloodletting and leaches and such are for real??? :-)
I always thought that was some medieval torture without real benefit.
BTW, I missed seeing the link mentioned above.
