Enbrel side effect

Posted by Susan on August 19, 2003 at 23:07:32:

I recently was put on Enbrel and had a reaction to it causing a high fever and low white cell count.

How many attempts can a person go through until there is lasting relief for chronic arthritis. Also we purchased $4,000 of Enbrel. Do we throw it out?

How can doctors do this in an attempt to help a patient and is it ise to continue one medication after the other to stop severe arthritis.

Use benedryl before the injection. Talk to your doctor about it. Also if you think you're intolerant to it it could be from the slight mouse protein I read that they make it with. Humira may be a better choice since it is fully humanized. Both enbrel and remicaid are part mouse protein and your body might be reacting to that.

Hi Susan,

I've never been on Enbrel, but I believe I read that serious infection is a reported side effect. You need to talk to your rheumatologist asap.

I had a sudden onset of symptoms in January 2000, and was diagnosed with RA in April 2000. I went from a VERY active person to an invalid in a matter of days. We were (finally) able to slow the disease down with methotrexate, and my symptoms did decrease. I then started worrying about what all these drugs were doing to my body!

Over the past year I did the E-diet (still NO grains, dairy, sugar) and am following the TLS Walt preaches. I've been able to come off ALL medication (methotrexate, prednisone, NSAID's) with no signs of increased disease activity.

I can't say that this approach will stop the disease in its tracks for everyone, but what can it hurt? I feel like I've taken charge of my health. Please go to the archives and glossary -- you'll find a tremendous amount of information that WILL help you. My rheumatologist believes that his treatment has resulted in a remission -- and, who knows, he may be right -- it doesn't matter to me; I only know that I feel 100% better than I did a year ago. If you are interested (and motivated) to try this approach, I'd be glad to answer any questions I can -- and will ALWAYS offer encouragement!
