Help for inflammation...worried about permanent damage while working on 3LS

Posted by Maggie [64.74] on February 10, 2004 at 12:50:15:

I have moderate/severe arthritis, especially affecting my hands, wrists, and feet. I have been working on the 3 legged stool since last summer, especially with focus on whole foods diet and SR. I am also seeing a holistic dr. who has me on lots of supplements - various b vitamins, primal defense, liver detox. supps., fish oil, and herbs for gut bacteria. I also did the ediet in November with little result. I am patient, and still optimistic, that this approach will help me. Yet, in the meantime the swelling and inflammation is terrible, and I am very concerned about permanent damage and joint fusion in my fingers. I have tried zyflamend for about a week, and have not noticed a difference. I also got some wobenzyme-n that I have been taking about 4 days. I am not improving. Can anyone offer some advice to get this inflammation under control while I continue to improve my overall health? I know NSAIDs will hurt any progress I've made with LGS, but I am starting to feel desperate. I have 2 toddlers so I need to be able to function! Thanks-

try to get physical therapy or hand massages - since the joints have not yet fused, you can help yourself in that regard - I have a few left over nodules in my hands which are starting to disappear due to work with an accupuncturist/nutritionist - we discovered that my pancreas was weak and possibly damaged and I've been taking a supplement called pancreatrophin (made by STandard Process - 2 tablets 30 minutes before each meal) and that has made a huge difference - BUT, I had to do all the things you are struggling with to reach the point where this would work - the SR, ediet, WFD, and heal my gut. It's frustrating, but don't stop. Get someone to deep massage your hands - get physical therapy - stay the course - you reaping more benefits than you know...

I don't have any personal experience in the arthritis area, but I'm wondering if you can increase the fish oil. Also, the company that makes Primal Defense makes a supplement for inflammation called FYI. I don't know anything about it other than that they make it. It can be taken along with Primal Defense.

Another thought, you might consider finding a chiropractor who practices applied kinesiology who can muscle test you for supplements (and maybe get testimonials from patients because the skill depends on the practitioner). I had an experience with a chiropractor who tested all supplements. I found this to be more effective than other supplements I had taken elsewhere, which felt like shooting in the dark with little result.

Hi, Maggie.

Listen to Carol D & RA. Also, how often are you doing your parafin baths for your hands?

I have never done a paraffin bath for my hands...is this an effective treatment? Do you mean the type I could buy to do at home, or something ffrom a professional? Thanks-

I already take 8000mg/day of fish oil. Thanks for the other ideas. I will look into the muscle testing.

I have always read it not good to have deep tissue massage on inflamed areas with RA...is this not so? Something about it "releases" toxins and creates more inflammation. I am currently doing rolfing, and she avoids inflamed areas for this reason. Provide me with more info. if you have it, I am interested! Thanks-

It's better to own your own unit.

If you have insurance, if you get your doc to write out a Rx for it they should cover it.

Thanks, more...

Thanks for the info. How often should I do a paraffin treatment and for how long a session? Any other tips?

Hi Maggie,

I used to do them on my hands & feet almost daily (when the RA pain was at its worst). The warmth is really soothing. . . . I don't think there's any way you can overdo it.

Donna's right. They're completely harmless and bring wonderful relief. When I was suffering I did both hands twice daily.

Thanks, Maggie.

LORDY, LORDY, LORDY!!!!!! What kind of docs are you seeing?

Department stores even have special little self-contained units that do all the mess and thinking for you to do this.

Listen to Donna and Renee.

The frequency is determined by the bother and how long and how much relief you get.

Let us know how you do.

I am ashamed of my profession that only recommends expensive and dangerous approaches while ignoring those that cost little and are perfectly safe. All part of the monopoly.

Walt

Your response made me chuckle! Thanks for that! I will get a paraffin unit asap, I've seen them in stores. Thanks!

Hi Maggie,

Just wanted to mention, my kids (boys!) also loved doing the parrafin on their hands (probably the attention more than anything), and it was great for their dry, chapped hands.

Be well,

Donna
