I too have been diagnosed with chrondomalacia. It took four years before the doctors were able to tell me what the problem was. I am no in physical therapy which seems to be doing more harm than good. As for what stage of chrondomalacia I have, I'm somewhere between softening of the cartilage and small ridges developing. For me the best step would be surgury. Is there a way to research the surgury? How long in the normal recovery rate with out surgury for this painful injury?

Hi, Nichole.
First, only the docs recommending surgery as "your only choice" can answer your questions about that since every individual case would be different.
However, I would caution you to rememeber: "To a hammer, everything looks like a nail!"
Before I (personally) would accept surgery, I would first at least try a combination of glucosamine sulfate at 750 milligrams twice a day, the essential oils described in the articles on the homepage, using 50% DMSO several times a day topically and learning about LGS , SR and stress-effect by going to the glossary, homepage and archives about these subjects.
You would also be wise to see a Chiropractor and a Certified Rolfer in consultation.
After all, you can always have the surgery.
Let us know how you do and, after doing yor homework above, if you still have questions, write again.
