The fingertip joint of my right index finger has felt somewhat sore for many weeks now. When I first noticed it, it hurt to push buttons (like on the phone or radio) and I just assumed I strained it somehow and didn't give it a thought. Yet it persists, I would guess it has been over a month at least since it began. It is a bit tender to squeazing the joint as well. Can a person get arthritis in just one tiny joint and nowhere else? Or might this be something else.
Thanks for any insight.

Hi, KMD.
If you are right-handed, this could easily be your first indication of arthritis, Arthritis always starts somewhere and that somewhere is comonly the joint you use the most.
Otherwise is is likely just an inadvertant strain and will clear up soon.
Hope this helps.

is there any redness? I'd wonder about a small foreign particle.

No redness at all, symptoms are all inside the joint.

I am right-handed - could it be from all this typing? (the book ...) I have had episodes of thumb joint pain when I type too much but it usually clears up if I give it a few days rest - this fingertip just stays tender.
I do have a diagnosis of tendonitis and bursitis in both wrists caused from too much strain of being on a walker and crutches 10 years ago (16 weeks on them after 1st hip surgery and another 6 weeks on them after 2nd hip surgery.)

Thanks, KMD.
Yup. My guess is that you need to be focusing on preventing your arthritis from getting worse. Everything you have mentioned is related.

I agree! It is easy to fall into laziness about Wellness and the effects sneak up on you. It's no fun to live with physical limitations and ailments, so the hard work is definitely worth it.

by the way, if this is arthritis, mne completely disappeared after 11 years when I gave up dairy, so look to food intolerances-they can change over time.

Hi KMD,
I see a lot of people in my office complaining of having arthritis in one particular joint. It may be true, but usually we do some exploration of the muscles around that one joint and find a tight spot that feels the same as the "arthritis pain." We massage it well and the pain goes away.
Another option or possibility for you besides what everyone else said.
Best wishes,
Jan

Thanks Jan, I could use a good massage (or series of them) as soon as money allows! I have to laugh at the thought of going into a MT and saying - massage my finger? :-)

Hi KMD,
Yes, include the rest of you, too!
But have her focus on the finger. I have one client who comes twice a month who has a thumb problem like that. After some focused attention on the thumb (as part of a full body massage), the muscle relaxed and only rarely bothers her now.
If $$ is an issue, another option is going to your local health food store if they have chair massage and just pay for 10 or 15 minutes and have the therapist focus on your thumb.
Best wishes,
Jan

It sounds like it could have been a hairline fracture actually...sometimes we don't feel them "at the moment of fracture"... I knew someone who had this on their foot....

Possible I suppose? But wouldn't I have had swelling and redness at first ...
Ever since I posted this thread I have noticed that I use THIS finger for so many things, button pushing, spray cans, putting downward pressure on a knife when cutting carrots, etc. etc. - no wonder its not settling down. I guess I could try to switch to using my MIDDLE finger for everything but then that could get me in trouble one day - LOL ;-)

I cut my thumb at work once. The doctor stitched it and put on a big bandage. When I got home that night, I couldn't unbutton my jeans-it required that thumb. Pretty soon, I discovered just how much I used that thumb for.
