I first heard about MSM when the actor James Coburn - stricken and nearly permanently crippled with arthritis - revealed that MSM took away his pain after only 3 days of taking it. I’ve had occasional pain in the ball of my right foot for which my friend at the healthfood store advised me to take large amounts of MSM to see what happens. At the time I did not know much about MSM, was skeptical and decided not to take it - always thinking I get all I need in my diet. (But we don’t necessarily as MSM, or “organic” sulfur, is very volatile and lost in processing and cooking.) We’ve also had some inquiries about MSM here on the board and so I decided to do a little research into this ‘miracle’ substance. Well, what I found really surprised me! MSM is not only for arthritis, but also makes hair and nails strong and supposedly helps a host of other ailments - from allergies, to candida, snoring and even wrinkles!!! It’s fascinating reading and I'm going to give you some links which I found particularly revealing and interesting.
First, though a word to Vince F. I know you're going to read this and I know you use MSM and have frequently recommended it. You've also said many times that different products of MSM seem to affect you in different ways but you didn't know why. I may have come across a possible answer:
MSM is sold by many different companies – whose product may be more or less PURE. The original MSM (a derivative of DMSO) was patented under the name of Lignisul distributed exclusively by Carolwood Corp. Yet other companies freely make and sell their own versions of MSM – probably changing the process slightly to get around the patent. This form of MSM is usually much cheaper than the patented form and is thus used by more people. And like me, most don’t know there may be a difference until they research it.
The paragraph below and link where I copied it explains this. So, Vince, that may be one reason why you react differently to some MSM products – OR perhaps the company just wanted to make a case FOR the patented product to justify the additional cost (I’m not a scientist so I can’t verify this for myself). But it’s something to consider when purchasing MSM. Here’s the link and the paragraph:
http://www.amni.com/reprints/msm.html
“Three U.S. Patents have been issued on methylsulfonylmethane. The first patent (U.S. Patent No. 4,296,130) was issued in 1981 for the use of cosmetic preparations. In 1985 and 1986, two additional patents (U.S. Patent No. 4,514,421 and 4,616,039) were issued on the dietary and pharmaceutical uses of MSM. Nutritional supplements containing this patented, licensed form of MSM have been available commercially from Advanced Medical Nutrition, Inc. (AMNI) since 1986. Although unlicensed sources of MSM are available, their use has been associated with gastrointestinal distress-a side effect that does not occur when pure MSM is used.”
In my opinion, The best overview of all aspects of MSM – INCLUDING A VIDEO CLIP FROM THE LARRY KING LIVE TV SHOW with James Coburn, Debby Reynolds, Dr. Ronald Lawrence author of “The Miracle Cure”, and several other guests – is at the following link:
www.msn.com
The next link explains the best form (tablet, capsules or powder) to take MSM and how much. It also gives more links for exploring.

The next link is titled MSM Research and Patents and includes directions on how to do a Purity Test – very important!
http://revitalifeinc.com/MSMResearch.htm
I’ve started taking 3000mg of MSM only a week ago, but in tablet form ‘cause I didn’t know and it was cheaper :-). I’m going to order the powder which appears to be the purest and mix it in my water which I like to drink during the day. I will also keep some capsules on hand to take when I’m not at home. I’ll let you know if I notice anything different.
I do hope this info is helpful.

I tried the MSM because they claimed it Could help
problems I had and explained one in a way I thought it could
be happening that I hadn't thought of.
It seems odd that the different ones help different things.
Like why would they be so specific and maybe not help
the same things but not to the same degree.
I kind of laughed at the LONG list of things they claim it
could help. Today i read something about daibetics and it
said that the drug most take is Sulfonylurea I believe that
sounds close to what MSM stands for. I thought they Took
insulin but maybe not. I have a diabetic friend that said
they are allergic to sulfa drugs but I heard MSM is
different.
Anyway I try a lot of things as long as they sound like
a possible help or cure since a few have helped incredably
as i feel my 4 versions of MSM have. My knees started to hurt
a bit and i had to think which one helped them since I
hand't taken it in at least 2 mo. I took one cap and have
forgetten about it again.
Good Luck..

I haven't had any gastro distress and only one brand that I
bought, the first one gave me any problems, a dull headache
and louder ringing in my ears.
I sometimes visit a BB of a seller of Lignisul brand and
they talk about Detoxing and symptoms you Might get. They
are at, msm-msm.com.
I have pills and casules and almost all help me. A CVS
brand I bought since i was going to try Every one I could
find locally hasn't done anything but maybe it would have
helped what another brand already has.
On the BB many people take a Lot of it like I have read 30g/
day. I took one pill or cap at a time maybe 500mg to 1g and
waited and then took another when I remembered and haven't
taken that much of any for a cure except for the Nature's
Bounty brand that just about cured my sinus problems. I take
it whenever i feel a little stuffed which except for 2
occasions has been a Lot less than the daily problem I had
that I had to take benadryl and pseudoephedrine to work and
I can go a week without needing the MSM.

I forgot this important and informative link which also has the following paragraph about sulfur sensitivity which many people are concerned about:
"Scientists almost missed MSM when studying nutritional needs because it plays such a small part in our food chain. However, in his research, Dr. Jacob determined that the sulfur in MSM, called sulfonyl, is as safe and as important as vitamin C in our diet, unlike the bad sulfurs: sulfas, sulfates, sulfites and sulfides."

it but not as much as you linked to. It's giving me a few
more ideas.
