It's a small world (notes about arthirits, glucosamine, chondroitin)

Posted by Rosemarie on November 16, 2000 at 22:41:57:

I did a search with Hotbot.com to get some info about glucosamine....and came upon an old post (10/16/98) by our dear former contributor, Robert McFerran, informing Dr. Stoll of a particular website which supports the use of chondroitin/glucosamine for arthritis.

It turns out that this website belongs to Dr. Jason Theodosakis, the author of "The Arthritis Cure". The site has a wealth of information which should be of interest to many here.

A particularly helpful section is where he lists the results of an independent testing of different glucosamine/chondroidant products for purity and potency. He says if you take Glucosamine and it doesn't seem to help it may be that the product is not pure enough or has other potentially harmful additives. He describes some of the different brands and which ones he uses for his patients. However he makes it clear that he does not endorse individual products.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

Vince, I know you will probably read this and I was wondering: You never mention taking Glucosamine or chondroitin. Have you considered taking it? (Or maybe I missed it.)

I've referred to it often.

Rosemarie,

I have tried Glucosamine/Condroitin and it didn't do much
for me but my latest problem is Supposed to be a thigh
muscle weakness/imbalance according to a Dr's website.

When my current problem surfaced I tried the Cod oil that
worked so well before and nothing so I tried the Glu/Con
for abut a week and nothing. I did the exercises the Dr's
site recomended and they seemed to help somewhat but I wasn't
doing them often and my knees only hurt when walking down
steps. Then I found the MSM and though the first brand didn't
help my sinuses so I tried other brands and the next one
did. I mixed cod oil and Glu/Con with the Natrol
in the begining since it took a few days for the pains to go
away and I like FAST relief and thought maybe all 3 would
work better. Only took the 3 once or twice trying it which
Could have been the cure but can't tell. This time I did
the same thing since the pains weren't going right away.

I can't stay with anything that they say will take months
to work like they say the Glu/Con will take. I search for
something that works Fast. Been about a week now with my
latest problem and it is about gone. Natrol is on sale here
and I picked up a bottle since i was runing low but wondered
if I would need it since I had been pain free for a few
months and hate to buy things that just sit like the Cod did
for years. Since I had a relapse guess I will and now it is on sale
for half price and maybe I need to keep taking it to
prevent a return.

Vince, it looks to me that you like using supplements more like medicine..that is, to suppress symptoms temporarily to get rid of different problems FAST ...instead of allowing them to build new tissue or strengthen your immune system. It would probably be better if you would stick with what works a little longer. But who am I to say ...you know yourself better than I do. In any case you're a great "guinea pig" for all kinds of treatment options :-)

Rose,

i wouldn't remember to take something if it didn't show
results and doubt I would keep taking something for months
since I don't have faith in something that doesn't show
anything and my experiences with things that have helped they Only
helped when taking them when i had the problem like taking
aspirins to prevent a headache I don't think that would
work often or at all except in a certain situation. Maybe
taking them before a situation that will cause a headache
which i have experienced and took them when I knew something
I was going to do that gave them to me.

With the Cod oil it worked within minutes of of taking it
and I could go for weeks before having to take it again. I
Did try taking it daily but then didn't one day and the next
day got the pains But I only got them when i stressed my
knees by runing, carrying something heavy or twisting
akwardly. Same thing with zinc for my muscle aches. I could
take it her before i did something physical and it didn't
work like taking it minuted before or after I did the work
like it needed to be in circulation. With the MSM I Don't
have the muscle aches that one brand cured even weeks after
not taking it so don't know if it Fixed the problem or what
and I don't remember to take it when not needed and may Not
need it again. I Don't need to take zinc for aches since
I started taking it so I can't see a reason to take something
if it doesn't seem needed.

I may take the MSM that helps my knees at least occasionally
now that the problem came back and it takes a few days to
get rid of it so maybe a maintance dose is needed but when
there is no pain I usually forget. Evern have to try to
remember Which MSM did what. Decided to write it down and
had a hard time remembering except for the one that helped
my sinuses since I do have to take that every few days mainly
when i smell something irritating.

I understand, Vince. By the way if you're interested, I got my MSM in bulk form (after learning that it doesn't go "bad") from this place at only $12.50 per pound. I take it in a little water (juice is fine too) which is very convenient for me. My husband is presently taking about 6000mg (every 1/4 teasp. is 1000mg) and he says he has more energy.

isn't juice better?

I don't know where I read it (I think on my bottle of MSM), but it says it's more effective if taken with vitamin C....have you heard this?

yes, you're right. It says you should take 500-1000mg of Ester C for every 4000mg of MSM. That's what we've been doing. I don't know what you meant by "isn't juice better?" You can mix the powder in water or juice.

I haven't noticed any difference taking the MSM with or
without C or Ester-C though they say to take C with it.
Straight C doesn't seem to agree with me and the Ester-C did
make me Need to stretch muscles but I don't see anything
different happen taking them together than seperately or
before I bought the ester-C. Could just be me.

12$/lb is a good bit cheaper than what pills or caps cost
but I guess you have to pay something for shiping. I hesitate
buying mail order if I can buy things lovcally unless I am
using a Lot. Guess mine have cost about .10/gram so a lb
would cost 45$ if my math is right. The one for my knees is
on sale now for 1/2 price and I just finished my first
bottle. The one I take for sinuses I have used 2 bottles.
With each of 4 brands helping different things and the first
brand I bought giving me dull headaches and increased
ringing in my ears and one brand from CVS doing nothing and
2 others seemingly not needed again for what they did for my
muscle aches it is hard to buy a large quantity even if a
lot cheaper since I could have a problem or it
might not do a thing.

It is interesting that the one that helps my sinuses
doesn't have to be taken every day and when I take it I
could really not and not be as uncomfortable as I used to
be and I had to take 2 sinus meds almost every day. They
do more and I will take them when I get more stuffed after
breathing in irritating smells like sewer gas or burned
plastic.

Rose,

A few more things.

I have a hard time geting started doing things even
though I don't have the aches or sinus problems I had before
but just draggy. It could be I was awakened too early by
my hounds to go out and needed more sleep. What has been
helping that is taking aspirins which I Think thins my blood
and gets me functioning since it is more like I am in a
stupor they get me out of but it takes at least 3 or 4 and
that concerns me a little being SO many so I only do it if I
Have to do something or am annoyed that I can't. I have
felt it could be brain damage since I have had many strange
things happen in my head from my injury like i used to have
to sleep every few hrs but that was after I did something
physical and I even had to sleep after showering.

I couldn't tolerate music for 4-5 yrs and had a BAD memory
and stabing eye, ear, and jaw pains, ringing in my ears plus
a few more I know I am forgeting. It is Hard to take the
aspirins even though I know they may help get me moving since
I feel that that would be a strain on my body the way I feel
before I realize they might help like i don't want to take
something that will get me moving since it is the Last thing
I feel like I Want to do. I have thought it might be a brain
/motivational problem since in an emergency i Can get moving
like a switch gets thrown or maybe adrenaline overcomes my
fogginess.

The other nite i decided to take aspirins. I Think because
i wanted to clean my turtle tank which i haven't done in
YEARS... How the snapping turtle survives Amazes me and I'm
not proud of it since it is a MESS but it is hard to get
to and Snappers aren't the friendliest creatures to deal
with. I did a half a$$ed job but has to be better for it
though I have had it 13 yrs and sometimes didn't feed it
for months Though I hear that reptiles can go for a Year
without food But I never over fed this one. Anyway they
HAVE to be the hardiest creatures in the world...

I woke on my own the next day not being awaken by my hounds
and First thing I wondered was if I Killed the turtle
Cleaning the tank and Had to go look. Figured the shock
may have killed it. The water evaporates in the tank
and usually is only an inch or 2 and I Do add some before
it dries out which Would kill it.

What i'm trying to say is if something isn't That important
I won't remember or get it done. I went through a period
forgeting to feed my hounds till they bugged me and know
I must have been only feeding every few days. Now I keep
the food and bowls in the livingroom and both now will open
the bag siting next to it and eat. My current female knew
to unroll the bag and dive in. She taught my last male to
do it but he didn't unroll it just shreded it trying to be
macho.

have some naturally occuring vitamin C. Certainly not enough if you are taking a reasonable amount of msm though.
