hyper mobile sacroliliac

Posted by

I have a condition called hyper mobile sacroliliac which has been causing me a lot of pain for the last four months. I went to the chiro and did not get much result. Now I am in physical therapy, but I must resort to wearing a belt around my pelvic area to secure the bones. What treatments work well? So far exercise has not done very much good.

Hi Barbara, I think you have been diagnosed with a fancy name for short leg. It sounds like one leg is shorter then the other. Is the pain in one leg, or in one hip all the time or does it change sides? Dave

Hi, Barbara.

Alexander Technique OR Feldenkrais would be ideal for you.

Also SR and gentle flexibility exercises would help.

Are you pregnant OR did this come right after a pregnancy?

Thanks Dr. Stoll,

What is Alexander Technique and Feldenkrais? I am 53 years old and developed this to my knowlege around 4 years ago. It has been getting progressively worse. The physical therapists say that I do not have a significant leg difference. Mostly the pain in on the left side right at the sacroliliac joint and it radiates a bit across the lower back. I cannot sit comfortably for long periods of time. I have been given lower back strenghtening exercises and stretches which feel good, but so far after one month not much real total progress. To minimize the pain, I take advil and ice it, but I am wondering about celebrex. Can you give me advice?

Hi Dave,

Thanks for answering. I am 53 years old and I developed this around 4 years ago. The therapists say that the leg difference is insignificant. On my left side is where all the problem is. Right at the sacroliliac joint I have almost constant pain. I am doing lower back and ab stenghtening, but I do not see a significant lowering of the pain. When I wear a magnetic belt over the pelvic area to secure it, the pain goies from a 5 or 6 down to a 1. They also tell me that I have a slight curvature also insignificant that begins in the middle of the back. To decrease the pain when I do not wear the belt what do you think about trying celebrex. Advil doesn't usually do a whole lot. The magnetic belt works the best, but I know that it is not good to rely on this all the time. The therapists tell me that this condition is correctable. What do you think? After four months of treatment I am beginning to suspect that they are not really sure.

Hi, Barbara.

Cerebrex is one of those new "wonder drugs": (I "wonder" what terrible long term effects they will have?) Those in the know say that it causes a new and long term change in the GI tract identical to LGS.

See the glossary about any unfamiliar terms.

The doctors asked me to give it a shot. I was sick for days after the initial try out period. Some people say it's great, along with Vioxx. I ended up with significant GI distress.

Doug,

A friend who takes Celebrex tryied to talk me into it for
knee pains I had so I searched it and read about how it is
Supposed to work and Not bother the stomach but have read
it can cause stomach bleeding Just like aspirins and people
have died from hemoraging. I didn't have a problem with
and even prefer Uncoated ones which I can't find anymore
but in my search of arthritis I came across MSM and James
Coburn's testimonial and though I don't think my knee pain
was arthritis the MSM fixed them. I stoped taking the MSM
and the knee pain came back after 3 mo so i'm taking it again
and it is fading again.

Hi, Doug.

MOST people's guts are not so kind as to give them warnings like yours did. BY FAR the most significant damage to the gut (from Cerebrex) is long term and silent so far as local symptoms are concerned.

Vince,

Thank you for your comment about Celebrex. What is MSM and does it have side effects?

Hi Dr. Stoll,

You have gotten me concerned about the Celebrex. What do you recommend for the sacroliliac pain until such time as some sort of physical therapy works for me?

Barbara,

MSM is said to be organic sulfur
They say it isn't a sulfa drug but sulfur and in all plants
and animal tissues but depletes easily in foods. They say
if you get any bad reactions it is the body detoxing or too
high a dose but I switched brands after my first gave me a
dull headache and ringing in my ears increased since I don't
see pain or discomfort as anything positive unless it goes
away fast and 4 other brands I have tried have helped 4
different problems with no bad side effects. They claim it
is as toxic as pure water so Not toxic. My experience is it
is worth a try for many illnesses but then people are
different as i feel different brands of MSM are.

Dr. Stoll,

What about MSM? By the way I did order your book.

Hi, Barbara.

Use your bodymind to tell you what is effective. ANY healthy alternative needs to be taken all the time and not just when it hurts since they are actually doing something about the damage itself.

MSM, glucosamine & essential fatty acids all are effective and should be tried first by themselves so you can decide if they help. Later, you may find that combining them will help even more. You will eventually find a combination and dose that will maintain you relatively pain free. Any of the above COULD take a month to help so you might have to take several months to decide what helps.

In the meantime I would take any combination of celebrex, ibuprophen, aspirin, etc., as needed.

Thank you Dr. Stoll for your help. I am also doing some meditation and physical therapy, muscle strengthening and stretching. How about swimming?

Hi, Barbara.

Swimming is perfect if you are a good swimmer.

"Some meditation" is fun but will not help this. To see results you would have to do effective meditation 20 minutes twice a day.

Getting back to you about the short leg. The pain starts on the left side mid back of spine (very tight) and continues to the left sacrum and across the lower back. The physical therapist is now saying, since that sacrum will not stabilize, and since the left hip bone is higher than the right, perhaps the left leg is indeed a bit shorter. They may put a lift in my right shoe. In the meantime, I am doing stretches for the left, strengthening for the pelvic area and lower back, and hip heightening exercises for the right hip. What do you think? Have started on Glucosomine and MSM for pain.

Barbara, I now think in my mind that your therapist is right on track. The only thing I disagree with 100% is in your post you said the therapist said your left leg was short and the lift should go in your right leg. Now I do not know how long you had this problem, but this will make you really hurt. But sometimes I was told this is something that has to be done to max out the compensation your body has already done to try and straighten you out. I had to be done this way for about ten days, then the lift was put in my short side and you keep adding lift until the pain moves to the opposite side, then back down until you find the lift you need. I played with this for about six months befor I found out that I needed a 3 milimeter lift. I wear it everyday and my problem is basically gone. I still do exercises, mostly stretching of thighs , calves, lower back and upper back every day. Just try to not stretch to far. First thing you know you stretch farther and farther. I could write more , but if your leg is short(like mine) this is something I found out you always have to tend to. As you go along, I can tell you two simple things to do to put that hip in place when it slips out right in your home. Feel free to e-mail me. I do not want to try and post it all, would take up to much space. Good luck Dave
