FYI - experience with 'Equal'

Posted by Kentucky Anne [799.2450] on February 28, 2006 at 20:05:59:

I recently stopped using the artificial sweetener Equal (and sometimes Splenda, it's really $$$).

First off, I used far too much. I liked SWEET southern tea and confess I have used as many as 8-10 packets of that stuff in a tall glass of iced tea several times in one day.

I knew I needed to improve my diet anyway, but what capped off my decision was the morning I sprinkled a Kroger knock-off of Equal called "Sweet Servings" into a cup of coffee. I didn't stir it, just set it in the microwave to warm. It sort of 'exploded', or more like 'flashed' with a loud popping sound.

I suppose the grocery store reps could say that something was wrong with the microwave, the cup or some other excuse. But I believe it was the sweetener product and I wanted to share that with everyone here.

I'm using honey now. At first it was very difficult to get my drink sweet enough without feeling like I was adding loads of calories, plus honey is not cheap. I also add a bit of stevia sometimes.

After about a month I noticed a big difference in how things taste. I ordered sweet tea somewhere and had to throw it away. It was so syrupy sweet I couldn't drink it.

Hmmm. Very interesting. I find that I can't eats candy any more. It tastes disgustingly sweet to me now.

many herbal teas are naturally sweet-try celestial seasonings black cherry berry (purple box) or licorice root tea from the bulk section of your herb store. The licorice root tea is SO sweet, you might want to just mix it with whatever your regular tea is, until you hit the desired sweetness.

Wow, those sound good, especially the black cherry tea. I'll definitely try them. Thank you.

I've always liked herbal teas and can drink most of them without sweetener, although a bit of honey in chamomile is a real treat.

This has been a great experience for me. Since November I've gotten off of Celexa, artificial sweeteners, drink at least 1/2 gallon water a day, and am taking some vitamins and supplements.

Now my weight, agghhh!!! When I had chemo the oncologist told me it could possibly add 30 pounds to my weight and it did. I must be solid as a rock because most people think I wear about a size 14. I wear an 18. When I'm really thin I wear a 14. But my blood pressure is high and I have hopes of getting off that medication if I get my weight down.

I am going to join the local recreational center, tomorrow actually, so I can use the pool and join the water aerobics classes. They even have a warm pool for arthritis physical therapy. I had back surgery several years ago for ruptured disks (I couldn't walk at all), then I fell on my backside and did some more damage. I think the water exercise will help a lot.

This is the first time in my life I've set goals, like getting off that med and actually meeting the goal. I'm very excited about it.
