Hi, All.
I do not agree with Betty's mechanisms but DO agree with her connections. See the archives about aspartame for MY understanding of the mechanisms SO FAR.

Hi Doc Stoll,
I gave up aspartame about a month ago. I wasn't a heavy user; a little bit in my one cup of coffee, an occasional Diet Coke and once in a while on cereal. I haven't noticed any discernable difference in the way that I feel. I know it's probably not the reason that I don't feel well, but how long does it take for symptoms to go away? Does it depend on how much you ingest per day and for how long?
After reading the article, I called my mother immediately and TOLD her to throw away all her Equal and never use it again! She had once told me about her tongue having a burning sensation, and I noticed that was one of the symptoms. She said: "Yes ma'am!"
Thanks Doc for the info.

Hi, Joanie.
There is evidence that at least some of the brain damage is permanent. Fortunately (or unfortunately) most of us have lots of reserve capacity so the damage does not show up (functionally) til much later. Any acute symptoms would resolve within a few weeks of stopping the damage.
The total damage seems to depend upon how much is ingested, for how long, as well as the genetic makeup of the individual. Some of us are MUCH more susceptible to the risk than others. There is no way, yet, to predict which of us these are.

...Walt,
I recently encountered the theory that there is a connection between brain tumors and aspartame and other artificial sweeteners. I heard this AFTER my father had his meningioma(not spelled right), a brain tumor, the size of a lemon, removed. I immediately sent him the article, but he continues to take in as much "equal", "sweet and low" and diet soda as he possibly can. It's so scary, I can't believe anyone who has been through what he has would be so ......!

Hi, d.d.
Your dad has a right to live his life and die his death. Unfortunately, his choices will likely end up costing the rest of the family a lot in money, time & effort and anguish. Of course, many people do not want to think about that either.
IF his tumor was contributed to by the aspartame, he will surely get another--or a recurrence of the first one. Of course, it may take a few years just like the first one did.
Good luck!

Hi Walt,
Thanks for helping me look at it another way. I guess he does have a right to live and die the way he wants, even if he does cost us time, money, pain, and is so self-destructive, none of which he wants to think about, I'm sure.
He gets an MRI, and is checked regularly, just last week as a matter of fact, and he's still clear. It remains to be seen, as you say, if there is a new one or recurrence. Whether he does or doesn't, I know now I just have to let go...not easy but I'll try.
