My 13yr old was just diagnosed with acute bronchitis. She has been sick for about 6wks with different episodes of colds, sinus infection, and an ear infection. She took all the antibiotics, but the cough and chest congestion really never left. The sinus and ears did clear up though.About 10 days ago the cough began to get progressively deeper and uncontrollable. At the pediatricians office on Monday, she had a nebulizer treatment, and we had to get an inhaler. It is for Maxair(pirbuterol). She has to use it every 4hrs.She has never been a sick kid,in fact this was her first ear infection ever.Does this mean that every time she gets a cold, there will be bronchitis afterwards? By using the inhaler is that going to make her body think she needs it all the time? The Dr. never said she had asthma,so why the inhaler?I've been looking around for info, but there are so many different opinions, and they usually involve asthma conditions, not bronchitis.Any thoughts from the board would be great. Thanks!

Did you smoke when you were pregnant with her?

Hi, Michele -
My experience was with my granddaughter. She is 3 1/2, and got a terrible cold and cough which lasted two months (the cough). When my daughter took her new baby to the doctor, she mentioned this, and when the doctor examined her, she said she had bronchitis and that she could hear wheezing.
She was put on antibiotics which did not clear it up. So, they gave her a nebulizer and recommended that my daughter buy one because it seems that my granddaughter could develop asthma. However, she has had other times when her chest has tightened up, which have loosened. So, her situation may be different from your daughter's. One episode doesn't mean (I don't think) that she will always need a nebulizer, but it could be a warning sign. Does your daughter have any allergies to pollen, dogs, cats, etc.?
If not, it could be just a one-time thing, hopefully.
Sorry I couldn't help more. Raisa

Thanks for your quick help!No neither I nor my husband smoke or drink. My husband has allergies to MSG,and fresh cut grass.I'm not allergic to anything, and before this, she wasn't either. She joined a competitive swim team last fall, and I can't help but think that this is somehow related. She was swimming 3-4 nights a week for 2 and 1/2 hours a practice.Maybe the chlorine did something. She hasn't been able to swim for almost 2 months due to that sinus/ear infection.I did have some people tell me that once this kind of episode occurs it's very easy to happen again.I have a feeling that this is one of those types of things that might never have an absolute answer.
Thanks
Michele

Hi, Michelle.
She is getting asthma. I think it is unconscionable for physicians to do nothing about this until any idiot can make the diagnosis.
MY suggestion would be for her to learn and practice serious wellness. My bet would be that she would clear up these symptoms within 3-6 months and be a REALLY healthy kid in a year.
If she does not do this, MY prediction is that within a year she will have full-blown asthma.
Let us know how she does.

Thank you for your opinion Dr. Stoll.I feel really bad for her, since she's quite an athlete. She's always been active, never one for the t.v.She's having a rough time being sick.In fact, she's an obnoxious patient(lol). Is it common for someone with this to continue with sports, or will this affect her so that she can't participate? I know you can't speak for all asthmatics--I'm just asking in general what your opinion is.All the asthma sites I go to are just about meds, meds, meds.Since this is our first occurance,I would like to use the inhaler as little as possible.I have a feeling that it is very easy to become dependant on it,and set up some sort of rebound cycle.I suffer from migraines, and I had a horrible time stopping the meds. Not for addiction, just that I think they made the whole thing worse in the long run.Thank you for your time.

Hi, Michele.
This is a TOTALLY unnecessary thing she has and is completely reversible.
Start in the archivea about asthma, then go to the archives about wellness and the home page about "How to be Healthy" for a free wellness protocol. In a year she will see this as something in her past! SHE has to decide that her future health is worth the effort because it will be an effort and YOU cannot do it for her.
In the meantime medications are what she will need but so long as she does not use cortisone, and only uses those that are used "as needed", when she no longer needs them she will know this is over.
Let us know how she does.

Thank you very much. She is very unhappy at this turn of events from the last week, and wants very much to have this gone for good!Making up school work and not having a social life because you're sick are great motivators!!Her fast-pitch softball season will be underway in about a month or so.Maybe we can start to make some progress by then.I will let you know how things progress.Maybe you'll hear from er as a testimonial!
Thank you,
Michele
***As for the negative thread futher down the board, some people will be able to find fault with just about everyone and everything.I have found many, many useful things here.If there is something I'm skeptical about, then so what? I get out of it what I need and don't devalue anothers thought on a topic. Thanks for all your help.*****

Today I received a letter from the school district that basically says that her attendance record is a problem.I have to schedule an appointment with guidance to explain myself. There are Dr. notes on file at the nurses office! We have had all the work made up and she is an A/B student.Never in her previous years did she miss more that 3 days a year,if that. She has missed 10 days since Dec.In fact,I have sent her when she probably should have stayed home.I know this isn't medical,I just had to complain!! Now I feel intimidated about making a decision on staying home or not. It's too bad,I'm sure there are many students that need a parent meeting more than us! LOL

Michelle, my daughter had the same problem from the time she was very small; she's 11yrs old now. We found that strengthening her immune system allowed her to eliminate the need for the MaxAir autohaler that she needed so frequently (and hated). We also found that chlorine seemed to aggrivate the asthma. She loves to swim but doesn't like to compete. Does your daughter also have problems with cold sores? Sinus drainage? You can e-mail directly if you'd like.
