Please Help~Friend with a 'serious problem'??

Posted by Vanessa on September 30, 2000 at 14:49:53:

Dr Stoll, A friend of the family (he's 70, and has always been in tip top shape) had a physical a couple weeks ago (he hasnt had one in MANY MANY years) and they found that his aorta has a build up of plaque. He is in the process of getting this taken care of, I hope, but I was wondering how dangerous this acn be and if something can be done? He called a nurse friend and she said that if he begins having a real hard time breathing to get to the hospital asap. Any suggestions you can give me would be most welcome. Thank you.

Don't know much about plaque in the aorta but my grandfather
had a Huge aortic anuerism and just saw a show last night
about them fixing one and they pulled out a Big Gob of Gunk
from it that looked about the size of a softball. I was
curious about how they repaired it since I had asked when
they did gramps and got a half hearted explanation from his
Dr. The surgeon who did the Op made a gesture with his hand like
holding a football to describe how big it was and it had
been pressing on his spine and making his stomach bulge.

In the Op I saw on TV they put a tube in and said they
Wrapped the tissue of the aorta around it. Is there an
anuerism involved ?? My grandfather's was a 7 hr operation
but they also took out his gallbadder. He was 97 at the time.

Hi, Vanessa.

This is atherosclerosis and the entire medical profession now agrees that it is reversable by SR, mild regular exercise and a 10% fat diet for at least a year. The diet "program" is what Pritikin taught for the past 50 years and Ornish "program" is now pushing for the past 10 years. Go to your library. If I had to choose between the two I would go Pritikin since it has a much longer success rate.

UNLESS there is an aneurysm (Listen to Vince.) this is not an emergency. The worst that could happen is that the lumen would become SO closed off that he would lose the use of his legs and organs in the lower half of his body (Kidney would be the worst problem.)

Let us know how he does. He may have another good 30 years in him IF he reverses this problem!

Namaste`

Walt
