smoking/bypass surgery

Posted by wayne on February 20, 2001 at 16:41:48:

A young guy I work with had a heart attack the other day and had triple bypass today,,,he is 45. Everyone says it id from smoking. I say from diet. How then does smoking plug up your arteries? I know it ruins your lungs and heart muscles.

Thanks

Hi, Wayne.

Smoking is one of the most important, proven, causes of atherosclerosis (the very thing that a bypass is designed to do something about).

Stress is important, diet is important, exercise is important AND smoking is critical. Since they all combine to synergistically promote the process, only the person's genetic structure can tell which is the most important.

Anyone in his condition, who continues to smoke, has a powerful death wish. That is not to say that he might be able to continue smoking IF he did a serious Pritikin Program immediately and for the rest of his life.

Walt
