Atkins Diet

Posted by Georgia on June 10, 2003 at 13:59:01:

Hi Dr. Stoll and others, What do you think of the Atkins Diet. My husband and I are not overweight, but are thinking about trying this to lower cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure. Do you think this would benefit us? Appreciate your answers and help.

If you are not overweight (and oh, this is going to be another string of pro/com atkins since there are claims that are valid on both ends) BUT since you are NOT overweight and what you want to do is what you mentioned - then EXERCISE is probably the route you should take! Also, taking garlic pills will help as well...
If you look at the pro's and con's of Atkins, you'll see it isn't worth it for what you are looking for - however, exercise has no ill effects and can hardly even be a subject of debate. Go online and look up "Atkins + Support group + Adverse Effects"....you'll see a lot.

What are your LDL, HDL, and triglycerides?

You probably don't need the Atkins diet. Just avoid refined carbs and maybe lower your total carb consumption, with high GI (sweet and starchy foods) foods going first. Read Insulin and Its Metabolic Effects.

Depending on your cholesterol levels and your beliefs about it, you might benefit from perusing http://www.ravnskov.nu/cholesterol.htm. It's possible you have been under influence of myths.

Regular exercise and practicing relaxation techniques will help much too. Maybe even more than a diet change.

I disagree with Michele. Exercise can certainly have ill effects. It's sure possible to overdo exercising or do it incorrectly and injure yourself. There's no doubt that this topic can be a subject of debate.

Hi, Georgia.

There is a specific genetic type that does best on the Atkins diet. There are a list of characteristics listed in the beginning 3rd of his new book that spells out that kind of person.

Certainly no harm in trying it for a few months.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt
