Dr. Stoll,
First of all, I want to thank you so much for guiding me through this diet & candida treatment we are doing for my son (age 7). I think I told you that over Thanksgiving, in four days he was a 70% better child & I reduced his meds by half & got by with giving him only one adderall per day. Well, our neurologist is finally listening, when I talked about removing wheat for the first time ever and the diet changes & she told me how to lower his adderall. (reduce it 1/4 pill for 4 days, then on the 5th day, reduce another 1/4, etc.) The first two days you reduce it, he is hyper a little, then the 3rd & 4th days he is not. Anyway, we were able to do this over Christmas break. We got to a threshold, though, where he has to have 1/3 of a pill at home ( 2/3 for school, but I think we will be able to reduce that soon, again).
I want to thank you. I don't know if it is CAndida problem, or wheat gluten, refined foods or all of it, but he is so much better & continues to improve every day. We had already been on vitamin therapy from Pfeiffer Treatment Center, and now it appears his absorption is better. His fingernails are growing & the white marks are growing out to the end & so I think he is absorbing the zinc better (and all the other nutrients) which should lower the copper. Whew!
My question is: We give him Nystatin powder at home, but it is hard to get it in 4 x a day, because he goes to school 45 min. away & I haven't sent it to the teacher to mix up. My husband ordered those clear capsules from Pfeiffer TC to put the Nystatin powder in, so that the teacher can refrigerate & give him a capsule with the Nystatin powder stuffed in it (by my husband . . . messy job). He measured it out carefully, etc. What I wanted to know is, will that harm him in anyway, or help him, or just be a waste of time? (To give him one of our homemade Nystatin Powder capsules with water to drink while at school) I wanted to tell you that since my son's behavior has improved to such a degree, my husband no longer thinks I'm just an eccentric, vitamin pusher, etc. He has started reading the books I have tried to get him to read for 4 to 5 years. He is an avid reader, just not these books regarding alternative health, etc. So, I thank you for enabling this change & your advice because it has made such a difference in our lives. We still are not quite sure the extent of our son's problems, whether it is more on the autism spectrum, or mental health spectrum, or both, or neither. All we know is he is getting better with his behavior and I will always be so grateful for your time and advice.

Hi, Straw.
I appreciate your sharing your experiences with the BB participants. Testimonials help people separate the wheat from the chaff.
As to your question about "what is causing what" MY take would be that it is all of the things you listed and probably more that we do not know yet. For a problem this bad, you are going to have to treat him just as you are (Do not argue with success.) for a couple of years to prevent recurrence. Hopefully, by then, he will understand enough to keep it up pretty well for the rest of his life.
The only problem with the clear capsule for the Nystatin is that it bypasses the mouth and esophagus where Candida also lives. Again, don't argue with success. What you are doing is working so you may not have to do anything more complex.
It would be a good idea to keep a simple diary to document his progress so, if he has any relapse, you can more easily figure out why.
