Hi Walt,
I would like to know your opinion on how you would treat a 9 yr. old son with mild Asperger's? There are soooo many strict diets and chelation and supplements that it is totally overwhelming to me, and worse, no natural doctors here in TAmpa, FL that treat autistic spectrum disorder. Just taking him off wheat is major, as he whines and whines for it, like an addict.
He is in a typical school doing very well, as he is gifted academically, but socially not so well. Do you think putting him on a gluten free/casein free diet would make much difference at this stage, as he is 9? I am fighting him just to get him off Eggo waffles.
He is on cod liver oil, lots of organic meats and veggies, no fruit, raw milk, etc. But do I really need to stop the wheat? Thanks, Juli p.s. How about the raw milk?

Van's has two varieties of gluten free waffles at the health food store/freezer section (the rest of their waffles are wheat, so check the label).

Hello, there
I'm trying the same thing for my son who is 10. It's been a struggle, mainly trying to get family and school to cooperate. I just got some results from Great Plains lab and found out he has problems with eggs and soy as well. (and bannanas...go figure) It is all very confusing, since there are so many differing opinions as to what to do. How do you heal leaky gut in a child this age, I don't know. But, if you'd like to swap some ideas I'd be happy to email. I've found some really good gluten-free things out there that may help smooth things over. (lifestream has some really good buckwheat waffles...I find myself eating most of them..lol) take care

HI Lilo,
I would love to hear your food ideas, gluten free. Can you please email me at Rank35@yahoo.com? Is your 10 yr. old an Aspie? My health food store is sooo limited, so I will have to order most stuff off the internet, can you give me some websites? THanks, Juli

Taking your son off wheat and casein as much as possible will help, not matter how old he is. Sugar is another one. Sometimes kids have problems with fruits because of the fenol in them. Kids on the Autism spectrum often have problems with an overgrowth of yeast in the digestive tract and heavy metals in the blood.
I did some research on this topic a few years ago for one of my daycare moms. Her son was finally diagnosed at the age of 6yrs with Asperger's Syndrome along with a few other problems. I'll be happy to chat with you if you'd like to e-mail me. Just click on my name at the top of this message.

Hi, Juli.
This is a tough age since they are just beginning to think they know it all.
If this were MY situation I would seriously consider taking him out of school for a year and putting him in a room where I could TOTALLY control everything he eats. Can you imagine what the child welfare people would do to you? I do not think you will get him to cooperate well enough to do anything to even find out how important it might be.
The only way you can know how much wheat (or anything else) is contributing to the problem is to TOTALLY eliminate whatever you are testing for a couple of weeks at least. Since wheat is the most common contributing substance that is where to start. Diary is the next most common. In a few % of cases it is the combination of wheat and dairy.
Good luck. This is a toughie.

Walt!
You just made me chuckle, thinking about the child welfare people coming to my door, he he, my hubby has his doctorate in social work education and is a professor and would totally freak!! /He is already freaking that I am denying our son an Eggo waffle, can you believe? So I have a lot against me. I think he has some Aspie in him too.
Just want you to know what a blessing you and your board are in my life. You have touched many souls in your lifetime, and I wish you lived down here in Tampa! You really helped me with the PVC/dysautonomia issues, thank you Walt, one of your fans, Juli We just have to keep our sense of humor in this life, ya know!!! p.s. My husband has my son benchpressing 25 lbs. almost daily and sometimes twice daily, against the pediatrician's advice, I dont know what to do but I am scared my son will be damaged from this? ANy thoughts on weightlifting at the tender age of 9?

Hi Juli,
Maybe you could all move to a foreign country for a year or so where eggos and other lousy foods are not available. :o)
Best wishes,
Jan

Hey, we are going to a pediatric allergist next week, can you tell me what tests I should ask for? I dont trust the doctors opinion. Thanks, Juli p.s. This is in regards to autistic behavior

I read a recent article on autism and it said that B12 supplements were effective. I think the link was from someone here at Dr. Stoll's board.

Hi Juli,
That's a good question -- what tests to ask for. I don't know the answer, but you know what, there are some really good websites out there about autism and also some really good websites about aspergers. Those sites will probably tell you what tests to ask for. Have you done a google search on those two topics?
Best wishes,
Jan

Thanks, Juli.
I am sure your husband is a real expert in many things but none of us are experts in EVERYTHING. I would suggest you have your son (hopefully, your husband would go along) seen by a sports medicine specialist and take those recommendations back to your husband regarding the safe limits of power lifting at his age.

Read everything you can by Lisa Lewis & Karyn Seroussi
"Special Diets for Special Kids" by Lisa Lewis (great & has recipes)
"Unraveling the Mysteries of Austism & PDD" by Karyn Seroussi
www.greatplainslaboratory.com - order the test for detecting gluten & casein. I think Dr. Shaw's is a urine test.
Also - Dr. William Shaw "Biological Treatments for Autism & PDD" A must read ... it gets technical at the end, but a very great book.
Karyns book will explain what gluten & casein do to the intestines in people who have this predisposition & will tell you how to change it & what supplements to take.
Good luck!
