Asperger's Syndrome need some information

Posted by ANN [2813.3338] on April 25, 2007 at 16:56:15:

Hi, A long time ago when my son was young about 6 or 7 I had him looked at from a clinic which specializes in children with ADD anD ADHD among other things. SO I brought him there to get tested from these people because one he was in LRE classes (special ed) for dislexia and speech. Well once they were done with all the testing which took a couple of visits, I went in for the diagnosis and they told me he had Aspergers Syndrom and I knew little of this and when he explained to me what it was I didnt see my son as haveing it. So of course I went home and nothing more came of it. Well my son is now 23 and in college and he struggles but does good he is going into broadcasting etc. He does not have any patience at all never really had and he always paces constantly he has been doing this for years and when I talk to him I have to tell him to stay still because he paces from the front room to the kitchen while Im talking to him . Its so noticable and he is so use to it that he doesnt notice it. Well of course my friend of many years has a friend who's son just got diagnosed with Asperger Syndrom and she said he paces just like my son. Does anyone out there know anything about this Syndrom who can shed some light on this. Im feeling bad because maybe I should of done something about it and had him retested somewhere else. he exceled in art and music in school and in college any help would be greatly appreciated.. Ann

There is a lot of information about asbergers online, but the best sources of information are:
The Autism Research Institute and
recoveryvideos.com

Please don't feel bad because you had a lousey doctor. We took my dgs to two pediatrican, a famous pediatric neuologist, a specialist at UCLA in pediatric autism and still no one diagnosed him properly. It wasn't until he went to a DAN! doctor that someone finally used the word autism. In this regard, parents know more than doctors, but parents trust doctors more than themselves. Forgive yourself for being unlucky and move on. Your son needs you now. There is a lot you can do to make his life a lot easier, and yours too.

Hi, Ann.

You know that the allopathic system is supreme when it comes to being able to put a name to EVERYTHING! What are the chances that anyone would take their child to a center like this and NOT come home with a fancy diagnosis???? In MY opinion, this is one of the shames of our system.

ALL of these variations from the "norm" are at worst a form of MBD (minimal brain dysfunction) and would be best treated--at least at first--by a strict whole foods diet and individual megavitamins and minerals (if needed) as determined by the "Orthomolecular Psychiatric Concept".

See the archives for brain chemistry and my first book for references and the chapter dedicated to exactly this problem.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt

Hi ANN, don't "should" on yourself! The only thing you can do now is love him and try to get him to do the 3LS which will help no matter how long it has been. There are MANY people I'm sure who have been misdiagnosed or undiagnosed with ADD, OCD, Bipolar, etc.. and are functioning normally in society.

One thing I would also look into is chelation since heavy metals can be the culprit for such disorders.

Would this sort of thing be effective for someone who has had it and is in their 20's and beyond?

Dear ANN,
Aspergers can be a combination of more than one developmental disorder, that ranges from mild to serious. Usually it involves the integration of sensory impulses. For those people the integration does not work in some areas, and then they try to compensate for the lack in other ways, which to us, who have all the sensory areas integrated, may look a bit odd.

For instance, my husband never went properly through the crawling stage in motor development, and he has a very mild dyspraxia, which for him means he cannot walk and talk at the same time. The reason is that he uses much more energy to keep balance than we do, and speaking when walking wears him down. His mother has the same, plus she is more affected. She does other things, like, rubbing movement when she speaks (rubbing the sofa with hands, or rubbing the glass she holds). The reason is that she has to 'spark' herself into speaking. For instance, she always moves one of her feet as she speaks. If she sits entirely still, she virtually can't find the words.

I am just giving you an idea of how this can affect people. There is very little we can do about that part.

When it comes to communication, people can improve. Even my MIL improved with my attention and care. I am honest, and just say: "you've switched off again, come back". (she tends to go into 'autistic' states). She responds very well to this. My husband is also very responsive, but the habits are unbreakable. I keep on telling him, "eye contact, please". They DO NOT keep the eye-contact the way other people do. I think this is because when the brain is not properly integrated, it demands more energy to both engage in non-verbal and verbal communication at the same time. BUT they both improved IMMENSELY on sugar-free, whole food diet.

Also, do check out the Durham Trial and the Equazen product called EyeQ - it has reversed lives of many children with dyslexia, autism etc. http://www.equazen.com/
http://www.durhamtrial.org/

Unfortunately I have no time to write more right now. There are many interesting books about Aspergers on the Amazon.com. I have not read them, only saved for later, as I had too much to do. You could go there and do a search.

Another tip: try to narrow down what "Aspergers" is for your boy (it may be only a few things)that is, what specific diagnoses are under Aspergers (f.ex. is there dyspraxia or other specific developmental disorders), and then find information on those. Because the general information on Aspergeres is bound to include a lot of conditions that your son might not have and will not respond to treatment for them.

Best wishes,
Sonja

P.S. If your son is pacing, I don't know if EyeQ would be safe for him. For some people, reverse fatty acid ratio may contribute to hyperacivity! Just had to let you know.

Thank you so much for that info.. I. like your husband did not crawl properly as a baby and also get "out of breath" if I talk and walk. ( have breathing issues to this day ) Never thought much about it until I saw your post.--I studied "Shiatsu" years ago and one of our many exercises was crawling on hands and knees to balance the brain. I would think that would still be a good thing to do, today, at any age. What is your opinion? I'm over 60 and to this day I am in excellent health except for my terrible, terrible breathing problem. ( I even had Lyme disease--did not know it and apparantly cured it w/o knowing it--according to the Drs. while in the hospital a few years back--no common symptoms ) Thanks again--knowing possible reasons for health problems begins the road back to being well.( of course, whole foods, exercise,SR per wonderful Dr. Stoll )

Oh, I'm pleased it helped someone!
I didn't think about crawling - but it makes sense. Any co-ordination training would probably help.

As for your breathing difficulties, I wouldn't know. My husband is rarely out of breath, but then, he just doesn't talk to save energy. He has always been a bit low on energy, but has found a way to keep a balance, so he never exhausts himself. If he does, he just takes time off and sleeps for as long as he needs it to restore energy levels. But the first sign that he is tired is that he stops talking.

I don't know what else might cause your breathing problems. Is your heart OK?

Cayce formula of breathing apple brandy through a straw inserted into a keg (where brandy is); the tibetan stretches along w/Japanes "makka-ho" stretches;rebounder and stat. bicycle (most days)-breathing is FINALLY getting easier ( HUH! and the Drs said I couldn't be cured!!!!) I see. Of course many things can help that allopathic medicine does not teach... but this does not mean we should exclude allopathic when it can help.

I just remembered something. I have recently read an article in a health magazine (I live in Europe) about a special rye extract that is used to boost immune system - and it cures obstructive lung disease. I remember a guy who was a smoker, had heavy asthma, and obstructive lung disease, and was on 20 medicines - started taking this rye extract and could drop all the allopathic medicines. NOt only that, but it took his son's asthma, too. I have no idea if this could be something that could help you, or if it can be bought in US - but I thought I'd let you know. One never knows.

Oh I found it on the internet. Here is a UK page:
http://www.oralmat.co.uk/drops.html

You can start searching from there...

Best wishes,
Sonja
