Walt--
Can you tell me if the ANA test can have results that change?? Mine has been negative up until last week. It came back 1:80??? I don't even know what the normal range is. They told me that is in the range for Scleroderma and since I have severe gastroparesis, I am afraid I have it. My sed rate was also 26. I am so scared! Does ANA results ever decrease? I practice wellness, but I have to admit that the SR is lacking. I have been so stressed this last week after hearing that. Now my whole body is tingling from head to toe....like mild pins and needles. Is this stressed related? These idiots have been jerking me around for over a year...I have heard that I have had everything from hep C, autoimmune Hepatitis, Lupus, Lymphoma and now this!!!! I can't take anymore! :o{

I know, Jennifer. It's frustrating when even the doctor can't figure out what the problem is. Auto-immune disorders are notoriously hard to diagnose, I understand. My friend, Theresa, didn't have her diagnosis of Scleraderma until she had a spot on her hip begin to harden. A nutritional approach is your best bet, in my humble opinion.

Cheezi--
Thanks for you reply. Can I ask your friends condition now? Did she have the CREST form of Scleroderma or the diffuse kind when it affects the organs? This really is a living nightmare. I have 2 very small children that I worry about.

Hi, Jennifer.
Join the human species :o).
MOST people put off to the last thing the most important thing they need to do. You better get started with the SR.
The ANA test is notoriously difficult to do reliably. The first thing I would do is get it repeated and take an average. Also, repeat the Sed Rate and take an average. When you let us know what they were, be sure to also let us know the normals for that lab. They will be printed right on the lab report--a copy of which you should keep at home.
Next, if both are elevated, go to your library and read up on DMSO (ask your librarian where to find the section about this.
Let us know what you learn.
I hope you have perused the archives about autoimmuity.

Thank you so much for all you do for the people on this board. I wish i could find an Md as caring and as knowledgable as you!
The Md was not that concerned with the sed rate being 26. He said that was not that high (above 20 being elevated), and that test is not real accurate. I guess along with the ++ ANA, it paints a slightly different picture? The ANA I had drawn in Sept of last year was normal. I don't know what the exact value was though. This time it was 1:80.....1:20-1:60 being normal. Do they always stain it when they do an ANA or is that a special test ordered separately? I read that the nucleolar pattern is found in people with diffuse Scleroderma. I keep thinking that is why they said they think I have it.
I have read thru many of the archives. Unfortunately Scleroderma is not addressed anywhere that I could find. As far as SR, I know it is something I need to master. I think I am doing pretty well with it, and then those darn MD's call me and give me some bad news and it sends me into a tailspin! :o{
I'll let you know what the MD says after I talk with him on Wednesday.
Thanks again....
Jennifer

Thanks, Jennifer.
Yes, the cells need to be stained a special way to see the structure of the nucleus needed for an ANA test.
There is no special archive about Scleroderma since it is an auroimmune disease like so many others that also are not listed.
See the autoimmune archives for general recommendations.
Let us know how you do.

Theresa is fine these days. No signs of Scleraderma. Hers was whichever manifests itself in the skin, so I suspect the crest.

Skin scleroderma is best treated with topical DMSO.
Of course that does not deal with the autoimmunological basis for it.
