Bakers Cyst/Patellofemoral Pain

Dear Dr. Stoll--
Hello. My name is Mindi, I am a 29 year old female. I was involved in an automobile accident on the morning of September 11th, 2001, in Long Island, New York. I was diagnosed with severe bilateral patellofemoral pain disorder. I underwent a surgical scope for my Left knee on Oct. 19, 2001 to "see what is going on inside of me knee." In doing so the OS decided that I should undergo THE FULKERSON PROCEDURE. I realize, after searching on the web, how extensive this surgery is. I have sought a number of opinions in the NYC area. Most of the doctors feel that FULKERSON is not the correct procedure for me. I have been going to therapy 3 times a week since September 23, 2001. I have tried acupuncture and I am walking with a cane. I am still in pain. My father, who is a podiatrist in the Washington DC METRO area, suggested after reading your website that I might have BAKERS CYSTS. So, I have 2 questions for you. 1) Do you know of any doctors in the NY METRO area that specialize in Bakers Cysts? 2) Is it possible to have a number of problems in addition to Bakers Cyst? Sometimes due to the swelling on the backs of my knees, which are the size of tennis balls, I cant walk. I found from reading other posts from your website that I have some of the same symptoms that your other readers have, in addition to other symptons. I am still in lots of pain. It has almost been 1 year. If there is any information you can give me. Please..
Thank you very much for you assitance.
Have a nice Thursday.

Hi, Mindi.

Sounds like you need to see a sports medicine specialist in consultation. He may need to work in conjunction with a Chiropractor--depending on what is going on. Be sure to take ALL of your medical records to her when you go.

These surely are Baker's but I would be amazed if any licensed physician would miss that. Although the trauma likely burst your synovial sacs through a terrible, and sudden increase in intraarticular pressure, after this much time the rips are not likely to heal themselves. They are going to have to be found and sutured.

Persistant Baker's cysts nearly always have other things going on inside the joint that are associated with the process that may have caused the rent. However, with your history it all may just be related to the accident without any associated conditions.

In my opinion, if you do not get this accurately diagnosed and resolved soon, you are going to have permanent changes inside your knees (arthritis, etc).

In the meantime, you should definitely start underwater exercises and gentle stretching exercises.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt

Dear Dr. Stoll-

Thank you for your prompt attention to my questions.
After re-reading my 1st message to you I noted a glaring error.
My father, Dr. Dovberg, diagnosed my problems as BAKERS CYSTS months ago, and suggested that I go to your website to read about other people complaining about the same symptoms of mine.

I guess I have a pretty smart Dad..

Previously, I told you that he diagnosed Bakers Cyst AFTER going to your website. This was not true. I just wanted to clarify this point.

How can I go about finding a physican in Metro NY that will treat me pre and post exercise and appreciate the dramatic swelling both in the front of and behind my knees post exercise?
So far, I havent been lucky enough to find a physican who is willing to listen to what I have just told you.
Thank you very much..

PS I use to live in Ft. Myers, Florida. I am familiar with where your offices are. I think the service you provide is great. Thank you again for any insight you can give me.

Thanks, Mindi.

You can get on the trail of a competent holistically inclined physician by going to the holistic practitioners archives.

Let us know what you learn.
