In August I went to an orthopedic doctor with a baker's cyst. From the beginning he virtually ignored it. I went in for an othorscope six weeks ago. I went back to see him after three weeks, I still had pain and was unable to bend my knee, he finally aspirated the cyst and has done
two more times and the cyst fills up again within
24 hours. Now he tells me that he'll have to go back in
an operate to remove the cyst. Why didn't he do it the first time? I have been off work for six weeks and now I have to wait another month before I am able to get operated
on again. I'm afraid that I'll lose my job. How long is recuperation after this type of surgery?

What was the arthroscopy for, if not for the Baker's Cyst?Did you have other problems, like miniscus tears? Did he do anything while scoping you--trim, repair? I hope he wasn't just sightseeing at your expense.

You ask what the arthroscopy was for. He repaired some tears, cleaned off some ragged edges, and other things that I couldn't really understand. He told me that if he did the arthroscopy, the cyst would reduce down and stop bothering me. I questioned him on this several times because the pain and pressure was in the back of the knee, not in the front so much. Now after six weeks, I'm right back where I started from and am facing another surgery.
He also told me before, that to remove a baker's cyst is very extensive surgery and it takes a very long time to rehabilitate. True?

Hi,Darlene.
It is NOT necessary to remove the "cyst" since just locating and repairing the leaking rent will inevitably cause the body to absorb the fluid accumulation that is called a "cyst". That fluid MUST be continuously renewed, by the joint fluid leaking into the extra-articular space, to keep the "cyst" present!
