baker's cyst

My doctor says I have a baker's cyst, plus very little cartilage left in my knee. He recommends knee replacement in order for me to continue my exercise-tennis, swimming, biking, and hiking. I'm thinking of just getting the cyst removed and see if this alleviates my current problem(pain, can't bend it/straighten it, swelling, etc.)...and then if that works, maybe drop tennis-since that activity, with all it's bracing, seems like it might cause much of what results in a cyst.

Hi Gary,

Tennis does sound like it would be hard on the knees.

Have you read the archives about Baker's Cysts? Have you started your SR practice yet? Have you seen a sports medicine specialist? Are you taking glucosamine?

I wouldn't even consider surgery until I had totally learned everything I could about both Bakers Cysts and cartilege, and had already exhausted all other possible alternatives.

Best wishes,
Happygal (Certified Massage Therapist)

Hi, Gary.

Listen to Happygal.

Even a total knee replacement does nothing for a Baker's unless the joint lining is tightly repaired during the surgery.

You must have terrible damage to your knee to have a replacement suggested. Have you had a second opinion?

You should have given up weight-bearing exercise long ago and started underwater exercise and swimming. In my opinion, any physician who recommends this massive surgery before having ever suggested to you that you give up weight bearing exercise is not the one I would choose to do MY surgery.

Let us know what you do and how you do.

Walt
