baker's cysts

Good Day Dr. Stoll,
Your information is very educative ,clear and informative.
I fell on a concrete pavement very hard and hit my knee, and the shin of my leg was badly lacerated cut deeply.
one to two weeks after my fall, I began to feel excruiating pain only in the knee that I fell and injured on the pavemen
Severe stiffness, severe pain and redness and much swelling on the inner and lower part of the that knee, one month later. Made it difficult to walk, before that there wasn't any pain. The xray did not show anything meaninful. An MRI was taken result small Baker's Cyst.(1cm.
Is it possible that the baker's cyst could have been caused from the fall.? The MRI states no meniscal/ligaments tear.
I would appreciate your reply, this would also help me in making a decision if I would need to have the surgery as soon as possible.I am taking NSAIDS for the pain and also physical therapy. I received a cortisone shot, the pain subsided for one month and returned.( this was before the MRI was done.
Your informative answers that I have been reading surely gave me the cofidence to ask my heart felt question.
Thanks..

Hi, Shirley.

The first thing to remember is how primitive the MRI will be seen to be 100 years from now. In other words, although it is high in the list of possible diagnostic tools right now, it is NOT infallible and a careful physical examination of the knee by a competent physician is still a superior way to diagnose intra-articular injuries.

This kind of exam takes time & skill and most physicians just go straight to the MRI since time is money.

To me, this says that you have an intra-articular injury that has not yet been diagnosed. That injury tore the capsule--the only way a Baker's can occur.

In my opinion, you need a better physician (sports medicine specialist?). Get copies of ALL of your records and take them IN YOUR HAND to the consultant. Let us know what you learn.

Walt
