Dr. Stoll:
I recently had arthroscopic surgery on my right knee to repair some torn meniscus cartilage. Before the surgery, my right calf was very sore when i would walk my dogs. My doctor said it was probably because i was walking oddly because of the pain from my knee. After surgery the pain did go away temporarily. It is now worse then ever and my right calf is swollen. I went back to the doctor and he removed about 150cc's of fluid form my calf.It still is somewhat swollen and hard. He said it was because of the cyst behind my knee. First is that possible, and second, should the cyst have been removed during surgery? I had an MRI and Ultra Sound, and to me it looks like 2 cysts. What do i do? Please help.

Sincerely,
Steve G

Hi, Steve,

FIRST you have to understand how and why a baker's "Cyst" forms. That has been discussed ad nauseum on this website for years and the particulars have been archived.

Anatomically, the meniscus is part of the joint capsule and so there commonly is a tear in the capsule with this problem. Unless the tear is repaired it will continue to leak fluid. Removing the fluid is hopeless so long as the tear continues to leak.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt
