Hi Dr. Stoll

Have been diagnosed with a baker's cyst and exam, x-ray and MRI. All show not much arthritis and no tears. Doc said it was "ideopathic" and drained 20cc last Fri. Knee is still swollen and area where needle was inserted is thick and hard as a rock. Is this normal and will it recede soon.

Hi, Nancy.

A Baker's cannot happen without a tear in the joint capsule!

Arthritic causes have to be pretty far advanced before they will show up on the primitive tests we have today.

SR, underwater exercise at least 3 times a week, anti-arthritic management options, weight loss if over weight, avoidance of weight bearing exercise, flexibility exercises, etc. all help this in the long run.

Walt

Hi Dr Stoll
Thanks for the reply. However, I play tennis 3x week and teach and take yoga classes. Do I have to live with this for the rest of my life, not doing the things I love, or can I have it surgically removed. I would like some info before I make another appt. Thanks.
Nancy

Thanks, Nancy.

Removing the cyst will do nothing unless the rent in the capsule is identified and repaired! Once the rent is repaired you will absorb the "cyst" and it will not recur.

If, in the meantime, you will identify the causes of the rent (injury OR arthritic changes), and do something about them, you can also prevent recurrence of another rent.

Walt
