bakers cyst

My son is 15 and was just diagnosed with a bakers cyst. He
is a long distance runner. Does this need to be surgically
removed or will it resolve on its own? If surgery is
necessary, how long is recuperation? If this were your child,
what would you recommend?

Thank you for your help.

Hi, Jean.

First, you both need to read everything in the archives about this AND about arthritis since that is what he is aiming for if he does not deal with the causes.

IF he has surgical removal of this (AND the surgeon does the right thing by closing the leak) he will need long term rehabilitation before he can do his long distance running again anyhow.

If he were mine, I would counsel him to give up his running while he deals with why he would be aiming for arthritis this early in life.

What he needs is extensive underwater exercises which will not bother this (will actually help). ALL communities have this available and he needs to do it at least 3 times a week (Aerobically).

Let us know how he does.

Walt
