I have been diagnosed with rheunatoid arthritus, the type that does not show in blood test. This started about 10 months ago with swollen wrists, pain and restricted use of hands. Eventually getting to a rheumatologist I was put on 10 mg of prednisone daily which helped the wrists considerably over the next 2 months. I was then put on 2000mg daily of sulfasalazine and a gradual withdraw from prednisone over 3 months. shortly after starting the sulfasalazine I developed a swollen knee and right leg. The family doc requested an ultra sound to check for a blood clot. No clot, requested a MRI to diagnose. MRI suggested Bakers cyst and wished a follow up ultra sound in 3 months. Meanwhile my knee continues to give considerable pain in walking and aching nightly restricting sleep.
Recently I had the 3 month follow up ultra sound and the result seems to be it was a Bakers cyst which has burst. I see the rheumatologist in a week and would greatly appreciate your comments.

Hi, Douglas.
See the archives about Baker's AND, more importantly, what Robert McFerran has to say.
Let us know what you have learned AND if you have any more questions.

Dr. Stoll, thank you very much for your prompt reply to my query. I am pursuing the BB and archives on all articles by Robert McFerran. However at 79 I'm a little slower in digesting the information. Meanwhile my rheumatologist visit came up and I wanted to pass on his thoughts. He proposes extracting excess fluid from the knee and wrists and shooting in a steroid. This he says will reduce the swelling and pain.

Hi, Douglas.
Probably will. However, you should know that this short term treatment also causes the disease to progress faster over the long haul. Go to your medical library and use the medline for articles about treatment for arthritis and its long term effects.
