Bakers cyst

Posted by Johnelle on March 07, 2001 at 12:07:19:

My son is 10 years old and has a bakers cyst. On Jauary 6, 2000 he had surgery to remove this cyst after attempts were made 3 times to aspirate it. In 6 months it had returned. On February 2, 2001 he had surgery for the second time to remove it by a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. He felt confident he had sutured where it was leaking. Both times the cyst was causing pain. A MRI did not show any damage to the knee. On March 3, 2001 (1 month after the 2nd surgery) the cyst has reappeared. Do you have any suggestions what could be causing this to reappear and should we push to have this removed again. Is there any different procedures out there that have not been tried yet?

Johnelle,
All I can tell you is about my experience and what my orthopaedic surgeon, who is very good, told me about my Baker's cyst. He said that you had to treat whatever underlying condition that is causing the cyst to form to get rid of it. There is a reason your son keeps getting these, find out why. In my case, the problems in my knee were surgically treated and the cyst went away.
Best of luck, Lynne

Hi, Johnelle.

Listen to Lynne (Congratulations, Lynne, for choosing a good surgeon!)

See the archives about bracing, Chiropractic and arthritis for how to manage causes.

See "Meditating with Children" by Deborah Rozman, as your only hope of permanently getting rid of the bracing--although the ages of 11-14 are the worst times for getting children to DO this--they tend to think they already know everything.

This child will have severe arthritis in his future if he does not change his causes.

Let us know how he does.

Walt
