Baker's Cyst

My husband woke up on 9/14/01 with what he thought was a really painful Charley Horse. When it had not gotten any better, he was seen by his PCP on 9/19/01. He was sent for an ultrasound. This showed no blood clot. When it was still not better, he went to his PCP again on 9/25/01 and was sent for an MRI, which showed no turmors, so they finally decided he has a Baker's Cyst. (He had fallen off a ladder two weeks prior and his leg caught in the rungs. They decided this was the cause of the cyst.) He has been sent to physical therapy. It doesn't seem to be doing anything for him. In the meantime, he is in a lot of pain, can't sleep at night because it hurts so much and hasn't been to work since 9/19/01. He has run out of pain pills. It seems to me that this needs to be drained at a minimum, maybe even surgically repaired. What do you think about why his DR. is letting this continue in this matter and still sending him to PT?

Hi, Vicki.

Trauma CAN be the only cause of a Baker's. I will bet that if the doc had what your husband has he would be treating it differently!

I would threaten the doc a little. Tell him you are getting a second opinion if he doesn't do something different. If you have to actually do your threat, be sure that you do not go to anyone who knows him. The Hippocrtatic Oath has been changed to say "CYA and that of your colleagues." rather than "First do no harm." See an orthopedist or a sports medicine specialist.

Let us know how he does.

Walt
