baker's cyst and nerve pain

Posted by Mary on April 03, 2002 at 17:52:15:

Dear Dr. Stoll,

I was diagnosed with a baker's cyst 2 years ago. The discomfort has gotten worse. Before the back of my knee would hurt, now my toes are burning and tingling. Also the back of the thight is burning. I must mention that I have had two microdiscectomies at the L5S1 level. I was doing great after the first microdiscectomy. 4 months later I slipped on ice and twisted my knee. I believe this was the time I developed the cyst. One month after that I had a second microdiscectomy. Ever since these two incidents my knee has not felt good. Now approximately two years after I fell my nerve pain is worse. It is slightly different from when I had herniated discs. That is what leads me to believe my new pain is from the cyst. I have spoken to several orthopaedic doctors and they don't understand how the cyst can be affecting the nerve. One is recommending I shave the patella because the MRI shows chondromalacia and that is what is forming the cyst. I had the cyst drained and aspirated twice and each time my knee and nerve pain felt worse. I had an EMG and it was normal. My pain is becoming debilitating and am having trouble sleeping at night. Can you offer me any insight into this problem. If only I could find a doctor who knows what I'm talking about. I live in the Chicago area. Thank you for any help you can give me.

Hi, Mary.

Since both your knee problems and the back problems common denomenator is bracing............ See the glossary for any unfamiliar terms and then the archives until you think you understand what to DO for the causes.

A baker's can easily press on the nerves as they pass by the knee and causes your foot symptoms. However, your recurring back problem could also cause that.

It is ludicrous (but quick) for your physician to say that the chondromalacia is causing the Baker's. Ask for any research showing that and watch him get angry. The fact is that bracing causes both and so they commonly occur in the same knee.

Scraping the back of the patella will do nothing for your Baker's.

You know that the surgery you have had for your back has a 1/3 improvement, 1/3 stays the same & 1/3 get worse, don't you?

The best treatment for the chondromalacia is glucosamine sulphate, 750 milligrams twice a day for the next few years.

Let us know how you do.

Walt

Mark.

Please go to the archives about Baker's. This has been discussed for years. It is not even a true cyst!

Let us know what you learn.

Walt
